The Augsburg University men's basketball team will face
Hope College (Mich.) in a first-round NCAA Division III national tournament game on Friday (3/2) at
Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., it was announced on Monday. Start time is set for 5:30 p.m. at the
Carver Center on the
Augustana campus (
Click here for campus map), with the host Vikings hosting a first-round game against Greenville (Ill.) at 7:30 p.m. The winners of Friday's games will face each other on Saturday (3/3) at 7 p.m. at Augustana, with the winner advancing to sectional action.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors ages 60-up, $5 for students and children ages 2-18, and free for children under 2 years old. No passes will be accepted. Doors will open at 4 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Augsburg (21-7 overall) earned the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA tournament with an
81-69 win at Bethel University in the MIAC playoff title game on Sunday afternoon, Augsburg's first-ever MIAC men's basketball playoff title. The Auggies are one of 43 conference champions who have earned automatic bids in the 64-team field.
The Auggies will be making their fourth appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament, previously appearing in the 1984-85, 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. Augsburg is 1-4 all-time in NCAA tournament play.
Hope (18-9 overall), of Holland, Mich., won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association playoff title for the 12th time in program history with a
106-94 win over Olivet (Mich.) on Saturday. Hope and Olivet shared the MIAA's regular-season title. Hope is making its 27th appearance in the national tournament, and is 31-28 with two national runner-up finishes and one third-place finish in its national tournament history.
In the other half of the four-team pod at Augustana, the host Vikings will face Greenville University (Ill.) in a first-round game on Friday.
Augustana (22-5 overall) won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin playoff title with a
77-74 win over North Central (Ill.) on Saturday. The Vikings shared the CCIW regular-season title with Illinois Wesleyan. National tournament runners-up in both 2015 and 2017, Augustana is making its 17th NCAA tournament appearance, and is 39-17 with four runner-up finishes and two third-place finishes in its tournament history.
Greenville (19-8 overall), of Greenville, Ill., won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and playoff titles, capturing the playoff crown with a
126-119 win over Blackburn (Ill.) on Saturday, advancing to the NCAA national tournament for the first time in program history. The Panthers average 126.6 points per-game, leading all NCAA Division III schools in scoring average.
