Pitching gem, walk-off grand slam key Auggie sweep

MINNEAPOLIS -- A pitching gem by Jamie Kaye (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) in the first game and a walk-off grand slam by Walker Rogers (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) in the second game helped the Augsburg University baseball team to a season-opening doubleheader sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Stout at U.S. Bank Stadium on Wednesday morning.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Augsburg 3, Wisconsin-Stout 0 (9 inn.), Augsburg 8, Wisconsin-Stout 5
LOCATION: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-0 overall, Wisconsin-Stout 0-2

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• In a scheduled seven-inning contest, Kaye went the distance and more, pitching a nine-inning, three-hit shutout, striking out six while not walking a batter. Of his 91 pitches, an incredible 72 were strikes. He only allowed four baserunners in the game, but had runners at first and third with nobody out in the top of the ninth inning. His defense helped him to clinch the win, pulling off a 6-4-3 double play and an outfield flyout to end the game.
• Augsburg scored all three of its runs in the top of the ninth. Mike Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) led off the inning with a walk, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a flyout, then scored on a single to left by Cam Erikson (SR, Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) -- his first hit of his Augsburg varsity career. Clayton Bodine (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) hit a double to move pinch runner Josh Tyler (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) to third, and Dylan Foote's (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) two-run single plated the insurance runs. The hit was Foote's second of his college career.
• Bodine went 3-for-4 to lead the Auggies, while Brookshaw went 2-for-3.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• A dramatic bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Auggies to the second-game victory, which ended when Rogers hit a one-out, grand slam home run to left-center. Singles by Joe Rydel (JR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS and pinch hitter Ryan Masui (JR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), along with a hit batter, loaded the bases with nobody out, and a walk plated a run. Brookshaw hit an RBI single to cut the UW-Stout lead to 5-4, and with one out, Rogers hit his walk-off winner -- his first collegiate home run.
• Augsburg scored single runs in the second and third innings, with Bodine hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the second, and a double by Jordan Peoples (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) brought home a run in the third.
• Peoples led the Auggies with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Rogers and Rydel had two hits. Rogers scored twice in the game, as did Zach Bakko (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS).
• Jacob Kari (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) started and pitched well, striking out three while walking three and allowing five hits in 5.2 innings of work. Charles Linder (JR, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) gained the win in relief, allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings.

FOR THE FOES
• First-game starter Max Sires had nearly as productive a game as Kaye, striking out six while walking one in 8.2 innings of work. He threw 108 pitches, with 77 strikes.
• Kyle Hamilton had two hits for the Blue Devils in the first game, and Jordan Wilson had two hits, driving in three runs, in the second game. Hunter Merrill hit a triple and drove in two runs.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg faces Wisconsin-Superior in a doubleheader at U.S. Bank Stadium next Wednesday (3/7) at 11 a.m.
