Seven Auggies earn MIAC men's hockey honors

2017-18 MIAC MEN'S HOCKEY AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Seven members of the three-peat Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff champion Augsburg University men's hockey team earned conference postseason honors, it was announced this week.

Forward Nate Flynn (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) earned All-MIAC honors for the third straight year, joining forwards Luke Dietsch (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Chandler Madry (JR, Bakersfield, Calif./Fairbanks (Alaska) BEST HS), and defender Max Pernhem (SR, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) as All-MIAC honorees. Defender John O'Connor (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and goalie Nick Schmit (JR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors, and defender Adam Pancoast (SR, Thief River Falls, Minn./Thief River Falls HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. Schmit was an All-MIAC Honorable Mention honoree, and Pernhem was an All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honoree last year. The conference honors are the first for Dietsch, Madry, O'Connor and Pancoast.

The seven Auggies served key roles in Augsburg's run of success over the past several years. Under 12th-year head coach Chris Brown, Augsburg claimed its third straight MIAC playoff title this season, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament for the third year in a row. The Auggies are 18-9-0 overall, 10-6-0 in MIAC play, and will host Marian (Wis.) in an NCAA playoff first-round game this Saturday (3/10) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.

14327A team captain, Flynn has earned a reputation as one of the best forwards in the MIAC, standing with a team-best 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points this season, including three power-play goals and two game-winning goals. Among MIAC players in overall statistics, Flynn is tied for sixth in points, tied for seventh in goals and tied for 13th in assists.

He has recorded a goal or assist in 16 of his 26 games this season, including eight multi-point games. In his 107-game career for the Auggies, he has 51 goals and 44 assists for 95 career points. Flynn earned American Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-America (West Region) second-team honors last season. A two-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Flynn also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-America (men's at-large) honors last season. He is a four-time MIAC Athlete of the Week honoree.

14325Dietsch has had a breakout season in 2017-18, standing second among Auggies in goals (10), assists (16) and total points (26), adding three power-play goals and three game-winning goals. Among MIAC players, he stands fifth in points, tied for 11th in goals and tied for third in assists.

He has had a point in 16 of his 25 games this season, with eight multi-point games. In his 82-game Augsburg career, he has 22 goals and 43 assists for 65 points. Dietsch earned Academic All-MIAC honors last season.

14334A transfer from Division I Minnesota State-Mankato, Madry stepped right into a dominating role for the Auggies, leading the team with 21 assists and 27 points, while adding six goals, three on the power play and one game-winner. The MIAC's overall leader in assists, he stands tied for third in total points.

Madry opened the season with points in his first eight games, and had a goal or assist in 17 of his 26 games this season. Including his first two years at MSU-Mankato, Madry has nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points in his collegiate career.

14343An assistant captain, Pernhem has been a solid leader for the Auggies throughout his career. Despite missing the last five games of the season due to injury, Pernhem led the team's defenders in total points (16) and assists (15). Tied for sixth among MIAC players in assists, he was tied for the MIAC lead in assists among defenders, also tied for fifth among league players in defensemen points. A league-best nine of his assists came on the power play, as he ranked third among league players in power-play points.

He recorded a goal or assist in 13 of his 21 games this season, with three multiple-point games. In 86 games in his college career, Pernhem has 11 goals and 37 assists for 48 points. He was also an Academic All-MIAC honoree in the 2015-16 season.

14346In his second year as an Auggie after transferring from Wisconsin-Stout, Schmit became one of the most dominant goalies in the MIAC, entering the national playoffs with a 17-8-0 overall record, .921 save percentage (643 saves on 698 shots) and 2.21 goals-against-average, appearing in 25 of the team's 27 games. His 17 wins and .680 winning percentage are tops among MIAC goalies in overall statistics, while he stands second in GAA and fifth in save percentage.

In 55 collegiate career games (52 starts), Schmit has a 31-17-5 record, 2.53 GAA and .918 save percentage (1,481 saves on 1,614 shots).

14340O'Connor scored three goals and five assists for eight points in his first 12 games of the season before being sidelined with an injury. That stretch included a five-point (two goals, three assist) weekend in a sweep of Saint Mary's on Nov. 17-18, for which he earned MIAC Athlete of the Week honors. In 35 career games, he has three goals and eight assists for 11 points.

14341Pancoast was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Pancoast has played in 10 games this season as a defender, with a goal and assist for two points to his credit. He has two goals and two assists for four points in his 24-game Auggie career.
