Brovold was a women’s athletics pioneer in the years just prior to the enactment of Title IX. She was a key member of the first gymnastics teams at Augsburg, competing for coach Joyce Pfaff, and was the first female in any sport to qualify for postseason competition. She was part of a team that placed sixth in state competition in the 1973-74 season. Brovold earned her degree in health and physical education from Augsburg in 1974, and taught junior high physical education and health after graduation. She also served as a gymnastics coach and judge for several years. During her career, she managed a recycling program in Ohio, worked for a marketing and communications company, and later worked as an environmental specialist for the Dakota County Environmental Management department, from which she retired in 2005. She also volunteered for her church youth group and for a greenhouse involved in lakeshore restoration. Brovold and her husband, Tom, have two sons, Chad and Shawn. Brovold currently lives in Barnes, Wis.
