Schwartz was a key member of Augsburg men’s hockey teams that won four straight MIAC regular-season titles in his tenure, qualified for three national tournaments and won national titles in his junior and senior seasons, 1981 and 1982. A defenseman and team captain his senior year, Schwartz earned All-MIAC honors in his junior and senior seasons, as well as earning NAIA All-American and NAIA All-Tournament Team honors his senior campaign. In 114 career games, Schwartz compiled 20 goals and 66 assists for 86 points, including 15 goals and 36 assists for 51 points in MIAC play. After college, he was invited to the New York Rangers training camp, and spent the 1983 season playing professional hockey in Finland. Graduating with a physical education and secondary education major, Schwartz worked for nearly a decade at Hill-Murray High School, teaching physical education/health and coaching hockey, soccer, track, and football. In 1992, Schwartz joined the St. Paul Fire Department, where he currently serves as a captain. Schwartz lives in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, with his wife Paula and daughters Jillian and Anna.
