Kalpin was a four year letter winner in football and captain his senior year. He also played baseball all four years and played one year of basketball at Augsburg. In his last football game, he threw four touchdown passes and two two-point conversion passes against Hamline, which Augsburg won 40-0. Kalpin’s impressive play led him to MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. His freshman year he was involved in Student Government and graduated from Augsburg with a degree in Mathematics and a minor in Physical Education. After graduation, Kalpin spent forty years teaching mathematics and forty-seven years coaching. Throughout his coaching career, he held numerous positions and coached football, basketball, track, and fast pitch softball. Along with the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame, he is also inducted into North Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and North Dakota Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame. Kalpin has also received the North Dakota High School Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year Award, Minnesota Central Lakes Conference Football Coach of the Year Award (four times), Minnesota Section Football Coach of the Year Award (six times), and Fargo South High School Educator of the Year Award.   Along with his impressive teaching and coaching career, Kalpin was a financial church secretary for seventeen years, director of the Little Baseball and Fast Pitch Softball for the Fargo Park District, member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Red River Valley Officials Association Board of Directors. Kalpin and his wife, Ruth have four grown daughters; Laurie, Nancy, Susan, and Katie.
