A two-sport athlete (wrestling, football) at Augsburg, Chmelik earned Augsburg’s Honor Athlete award in 1986. In football, Chmelik earned All-MIAC honors in 1985 and All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 1984, starting all four seasons as an offensive lineman. He earned MIAC Player of the Week honors in 1984 and was a team captain in 1985, earning team offensive MVP and Auggie Award honors. In wrestling, Chmelik was a two-time All-American at heavyweight, finishing sixth and eighth in national tournaments, while being part of the Auggies’ national runner-up squad in 1984, the school’s top national tournament finish at the time. He qualified for the NCAA national tournament three times and won MIAC titles in both 1984 and 1985. He recovered from a broken leg suffered in his final football game in 1985 to wrestle in the 1986-87 season. Chmelik was chemistry major and mathematics minor at Augsburg. He earned his chiropractic degree in 1990 and practiced in Rushford, Minnesota for five years, while also serving as wrestling coach at Rushford-Peterson High School. He moved to Faribault to practice in his hometown until 2007, and now serves as a support clinician for Optum Health. Chmelik and his wife, Julie, have two sons, Dalton and Tristan, and live in Faribault, Minnesota.
