Osberg was a standout football player at Augsburg from 1958-61, a nose guard-offensive guard, was named All-MIAC twice, and was selected Most Valuable Player, team captain and Lutheran All-American. After graduating from Augsburg in 1962, Osberg began his coaching career at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School, serving seven years as an assistant coach from 1962-70, before taking one year off to serve as a graduate assistant on Bob Devaney's staff at Nebraska. In 1971, Osberg was named head coach at Wayzata (Minn.) High School, where he served for six seasons. In 1977, he returned to his alma mater to join the Auggie coaching staff, serving eight seasons as Augsburg's defensive coordinator from 1977-84. Then Osberg spent 14 seasons (1991-2004) as Augsburg's head coach, compiling a school-record 62 victories (62-79). In 1997, his Auggies won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and qualified for the NCAA Division III national playoffs, engineering the best record (10-2) in school history.  Off the field, Osberg taught biology in the Wayzata school district for 20 years and was recognized for his teaching excellence there. He has also served as a Sunday School teacher and a youth coach in softball and hockey. He also served as an instructor in the Health and Physical Education department during his Augsburg tenure. Osberg resides in Plymouth, Minnesota, with his wife, Nina, who taught at Wayzata High School. They have six children: Rich, Jennifer,Peter, Jeff, James and Anne, and seven grandchildren: Grace, Johanna, Lydia, Zoe, Mason, Riley and Jayde.

As a player at Augsburg, Osberg was a two-time All-MIAC selection, in addition to being selected team MVP, team captain and a Lutheran All-American ... Inducted into Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.

It's fitting that Jack Osberg is our first-ever recipient of the new Legend of Augsburg Athletics Award, given all he has meant to the university as an athlete, instructor, coach and mentor. In 14 seasons as head coach of the Auggie football team, Jack's teams won a school-record 62 games, highlighted by the magical 1997 season. Augsburg went 10-2, winning the MIAC championship for the first time since 1928 and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division III national tournament. His Auggie teams had .500 or better records seven times from 1991 until his final year in 2004. His years as head coach at his alma mater were among the highlights of a lifetime spent coaching on the football sidelines. He was head coach at Wayzata High School for six years during a 20-year career as a biology teacher, and has also served as an assistant coach at Minneapolis Roosevelt, the University of Nebraska, Osseo High School and at Augsburg. He is back on the Auggie sidelines this year as an assistant on Derrin Lamker's staff, marking his 60th year of coaching football. Jack was a standout football player in his Auggie career, named to the All-MIAC team twice, while being selected team MVP, team captain and a Lutheran All-American. Jack was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979. Jack and his wife, Nina, live in Plymouth, Minnesota. They have six children, Rich, Jennifer, Peter, Jeff, James and Anne, and many grandchildren.
