Jim Gunderson has become one of the best young coaches in Minnesota since his Augsburg days. Jim is in his fourth year as football head coach and seventh as track and field head coach at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield. He led the Stars to the section runner-up honor in 2016, and the section and Minnesota Class 4A state titles in 2017. Jim earned Class 4A State Coach of the Year honors from the Minnesota Football Coaches Association in 2017. He also coordinates Holy Angels’ Faith in Action program. Jim also coached at Mater Dei High School in California and Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights before coming to Holy Angels, and he was an associate head coach in football for four seasons before being named head coach. As a football linebacker at Augsburg, he accumulated 237 tackles in 38 career games, with seven-and-a-half tackles for-loss, seven passes defensed, four fumbles and a sack in his career. He earned his bachelor’s degree in social science and secondary education from Augsburg in 2006 and was a three-year Dean’s List honoree. He serves as the Response to Intervention Specialist at Holy Angels, and he lives in South Minneapolis.
