Jim Peterson was a key contributor to Augsburg championship teams in two sports during his career. In men’s wrestling, Jim was a three-time All-American, winning the NCAA Division III national title at 167 pounds in 1998, while finishing second nationally at 174 in 1999 and seventh at 167 in 1997. He finished his career with a 129-26 record, and was a member of Auggie teams that won the 1997 and 1998 Division III national titles, while finishing second in 1996 and 1999. He also won an MIAC championship at 174 pounds in 1999. In football, Jim was a classic “West Coast Offense” running back, adept in rushing the ball as well as catching passes out of the backfield. In his football career, he rushed 138 times for 520 yards, while catching 70 passes for 622 yards and scoring seven touchdowns. He earned All-MIAC second-team honors in both 1997 and 1998. Jim was a member of the 1997 Auggie football squad that won the MIAC championship for the first time since 1928, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division III national playoffs. Jim was a management information systems major, with minors in German and business, at Augsburg, and earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 1999, in addition to earning NWCA Scholar All-American honors three times. He was active in campus ministry and worked in the sports information and hockey offices at Augsburg. After graduating, he spent four years as an assistant wrestling coach at Augsburg. He has spent the past 23 years working in sales and sales leadership, while also serving as a high school wrestling official, youth coach in baseball, softball and wrestling, and as a Sunday School teacher and music leader. Jim and his wife, Erin, a 2000 Augsburg alumnae, have two children, Noah and Eleanor, and live in Bloomington, Minnesota.
