Joe Lavin was one of the most successful pitchers in recent years for the Augsburg baseball team, earning All-MIAC honors in 1995. In his all-conference season, he won four games, including three in league play with a shutout, while recording a 1.42 earned-run average and 41 strikeouts against just 16 walks and 32 hits. He was an All-Midwest Region second-team honoree in 1995 and earned MIAC Player of the Week honors multiple times. Joe says that some of his greatest athletic highlights include a 2-0 complete-game shutout win against Gustavus, where he hit a home run, and a complete game shutout win at St. Olaf. Joe also served on student government at Augsburg, and was junior class president. He earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Augsburg in 1997, and later earned his master’s degree in special education from St. Thomas. He has taught special education for 22 years, including 20 years at schools in Minneapolis and the last two years at Osseo High School. He has also served as a coach for two seasons at Concordia-St. Paul, and has remained active in athletics, playing town ball for 32 years with Richfield and the Northwest Orioles, and winning state titles in broomball. Joe and his wife Heidi have four children -- Olivia, Tim, Anna and Claire, and live in Maple Grove, Minnesota.
