A six-time All-American in track and field, Sterner Engel qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor national championships in both the 100-meter hurdles and heptathlon in 1986 and 1987, finishing fourth (hurdles) and eighth (heptathlon) in 1986 and finishing second (hurdles) and third (heptathlon) in 1987. She also placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles as the NCAA Division III indoor national championships in 1986 and sixth in the event in 1987. She earned MIAC Most Valuable Player honors in track in 1987, and was team Most Valuable Player that same year. A math education major, she earned first-team GTE Academic All-American honors twice (1986.1987). Sterner Engle was named Augsburg’s Women’s Honor Athlete in 1987. Since graduating from Augsburg, she began her teaching  career, teaching at Duluth Central High School before returning to the Twin Cities to teach 9th grade math in the Chaska School District, where she continues to teach today. She received her Master of Education degree in December, 2000. She and her husband, Joel, have three children – Derrick, Kaylee, and Sean – and live in Chaska, Minnesota.
