A four-year letterwinner as a member of the Augsburg football team, Hoff earned distinction as one of the top high school football coaches in the state of Wisconsin during a 18-year tenure as the head coach at Superior High School. Hoff arrived at Augsburg after a distinguished high school athletic career at Osseo (Minn.) High School, where he was an all-conference honoree in football, basketball and baseball, and earned a school-record 11 varsity letters. After a four-year career as a member of the Augsburg football team, Hoff was named as the football head coach at Superior prior to the start of the 1971 season. Playing an independent schedule for all but two years, Hoff quickly turned a struggling program into one that gained respect throughout the state of Wisconsin. As an independent, the Spartans took pride in playing a challenging and demanding schedule that included games against top teams in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. Under Hoff’s direction, the Spartans earned two conference championship titles and advanced to the section final three times, while recording an overall record of 112-52. A District 1 Coach of the Year selection in 1976, Hoff was inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002. A health and physical education major at Augsburg, Hoff served as a physical education teacher and administrator for 33 years in the Wisconsin public education system. Since his retirement, Hoff has successfully embarked on numerous hiking, biking and canoeing trips across the United States. In 2004, he biked over 10,000 miles alone, including a trip around the United States perimeter to help raise funds to build a $2.5 million athletic complex project for the city of Superior. In 2006 and 2007, Hoff paddled and portaged 6,200 miles in a canoe across the United States from Washington D.C. to Astoria, Ore.. Hoff and his wife, LuAnne, have three grown children -- Dean, Eric, and Heidi -- and five grandchildren, and live in Superior, Wis.
