Three-time football All-MIAC selection, Lutheran All-American, and two-time Augsburg Most Valuable Player, Thompson was a member of the 1973 Augsburg football squad that finished second in the MIAC with a 7-2 record. He has taught math at Lakeville High School since 1974 and has served as the head football coach at Lakeville since 1979. Thompson has been names Coach of the Year six times and is also in the Lakeville High School Hall of Fame. His high school teams have won ten conference championships, four time state runner-ups, and three state championships.
