Nelson served six years as trainer for football, basketball and baseball. He was also a student body president, band member, and directed a church choir while at Augsburg. After graduating from the seminary in 1946, he served 40 years as a parish pastor at parishes in Powers Lake, North Dakota, Spring Lake Park and Mounds View, Minnesota and Westby, Wisconsin.
