Sandbo was a co-captain, earned All-MIAC and All-NAIA District 13 honors in football, along with being named team Most Valuable Player. He began his teaching career at Spring Lake Park High School after graduation, where he was department chairman for the Physical Education and Health Departments. Sandbo also was the head football coach and head track coach. He served as assistant principal at Spring Lake Park and principal at Worthington Area Junior High. Later he was an assistant football coach at Augsburg and at Macalester. Sandbo is a member of the Minnesota State High School Track Coaches Association and Minnesota Association of High School Principals. He retired from his position as  principal from Cook County Middle School/High School in Grand Marais and is currently General Manager of the Grand Marais Hotel Company.
