A member of Auggie teams that won MIAC championships in 1975, 1976 and 1977, Jonas finished his career 33rd on Augsburg’s all-time scoring list (747 points) and was Augsburg’s Honor Athlete in 1977. The Auggies won the NAIA district title and advanced to the national tournament in 1977, a season in which he earned All-MIAC, Lutheran College All-American and NAIA All-District honors. After graduating from Augsburg, he worked as a teacher and coach in Seoul, South Korea for two years, and then returned to the United States, where he worked as an assistant coach at North Dakota State, while earning his master’s degree in education. He served as an assistant coach at Augsburg in 1982-83. He moved to North Dakota in 1983, where he was a physical education teacher and head coach on a state tournament team at Fargo South High School. From 1989-96, he served as men’s basketball head coach at the University of Mark in Bismark, N.D., earning conference championships in 1993 and 1995. He earned his PhD in physical education from North Dakota in 1993, and is currently an associated professor and student teaching program director at the University of Mary. He and his wife, Shirley, have two children, Melissa and Jason.
