A three-time All-American in wrestling (1979, 1981, 1982), Whirley earned the NAIA national title at 126 pounds in 1979 and won MIAC titles in 1978, 1981, and 1982, as part of Auggies teams that finished eighteenth, third, fifth and seventh nationally in his career. One of the top lightweight wrestler in school history, he earned team Most Valuable Player honors his junior and senior seasons and was national finalist twice. He was a team captain twice and earned All-MIAC honors all four years. He has been an assistant head coach for the Auggie program for 23 seasons (1982-84, 1987-present), including all ten NCAA Division III nation championship teams. After graduating from Augsburg, he initially worked at a local moving company and became an operations manager for two companies. He returned to school to earn a degree in health education from Minnesota and a master’s degree in education from Hamline. He currently teaches in the Robbinsdale School District as a middle school physical education teacher, and lives in Maple Grove, Minnesota, with his wife, Kelley, and children Adam, Megan and Michael.
