Nelson earned All-MIAC and NAIA All-American honors as a leader of the 1977-78 Augsburg squad that captured the NAIA national title in men’s hockey, the school’s first-ever national team title. Augsburg shared the MIAC regular-season title with Gustavus in 1976-77 and won the conference title outright in 1977-78. A center, Nelson scored 57 goals and had 57 assists for 114 points in his career. Nelson was a business accounting major and economics minor at Augsburg. Since leaving Augsburg, he has worked as an analyst and accountant at General Mills and Carlson Companies and as partner and owner of Bridgeland Development Company since 1997. He is also a Cub Scout leader and youth athletics coach. Nelson and his wife Laura have two children, Nathan and Sarah, and live in Lakeville, Minnesota.
