Tom Layte spent just one season as an Augsburg wrestler after transferring from Western New England College, but he certainly made the most of it. In the 1994-95 season, Tom went 44-4, winning the NCAA Division III national title at 150 pounds and earning Most Outstanding Wrestler honors at the national meet, helping to lead the Auggies to the national title as a team. He earned MIAC runner-up honors in that season as well. He earned his degree in business administration from Augsburg in 1995. Since graduating, he began a successful coaching career, first serving as an Augsburg assistant coach. In his four years on the staff, the Auggies won NCAA national titles in 1997 and 1998, while placing second twice. In 1999, he went back east, where he was named the head coach for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s wrestling team. He coached the Engineers for 10 years on the collegiate level, and since 2009 as a club program. The Engineers won national club titles in both 2010 and 2013. Tom was inducted into the Maine Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005 and the New England Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015. Since 1999, he has served as an operations major of the broker and dealer at Cantella and Company. Tom and his wife Sheelagh have two children, Colton and Lucy, and live in Swampscott, Massachusetts.
