Schmidt was a three-time MIAC champion and three-time national place winner in wrestling, finishing second his junior year. In his senior year he was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player, despite not being able to complete his senior season because of a neck injury sustained while wrestling in Korea. He was part of a national runner-up team his junior year. After graduating from Augsburg, Schmidt taught math and coached wrestling in Mosinee, Wisconsin, for two years, then moved to Winona, where he taught math and physical education for 18 years. He also coached wrestling, cross country, softball, and baseball and was named 1989 state Class AA Wrestling Coach of the Year. From 1990-97, Schmidt was Secretary of Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association and selection chairman for Academic All-State award in wrestling.
