MINNEAPOLIS (11/8/02) -- Lil Caligiuri (Fr., Wheaton, Minn.) and Erin McGrath (Fr., Chipewa Niagara Falls, Ontario) had a goal and assist each in their collegiate debuts, leading Lake Forest College (Ill.) past host Augsburg College (Minn.) in a nonconference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Lake Forest scored three goals in 1:42 span midway through the first period, eventually building a 4-1 advantage that Augsburg could not overcome. The Auggies cut the edge to 4-3 entering the third period, but the Foresters scored twice in a 22-second span to preserve the victory.
It was Lake Forest's first game of the season, while Augsburg drops to 0-2 overall. The teams will complete the series Saturday (11/9) at 2 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Emily Blegen (Fr., Elk River, Minn.) scored first for the Foresters at the 10:55 mark of the first period, followed 26 seconds later by a goal from Nicki Paquette (Fr., Mocncton, New Brunswick).
Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) scored for the Auggies 14 seconds later, but Lake Forest's Robyn Slater (Sr., Granite City, Ill.) put a power-play goal in the net at the 12:37 mark. Caligiuri scored her first collegiate goal on the power play at the 16:15 mark.
Lake Forest outshot Augsburg by a 15-3 mark in the first period, but the Auggies outshot the Foresters by a 25-15 mark the rest of the way.
Augsburg's first line of Chezick,
Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.) and
Melynda Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) accounted for the Auggies' scoring in the contest. Chezick scored her goal in the first period, and assisted on two power-play goals in the second, the first by Annunziato with an assist to
Genevieve Allegrezza (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Service HS), the second on a goal from Kleewein, with an assist to Annunziato.
Lake Forest capped the game late in the third period, when McGrath scored at the 14:29 mark, followed 22 seconds later by a goal from Mel Guillermo (Fr., North Las Vegas, Nev.).
Theresa Taylor (Jr., Spartanburg, S.C.) made 24 saves to claim the win for the Foresters, while
Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.) took the loss for Augsburg, making 24 saves.
