LAKE FOREST, Ill. (11/15/03) --
Kristin Johnson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 30 saves to record her seventh career shutout in goal, as Augsburg College claimed a series sweep over Lake Forest College with its second straight 3-0 shutout, in nonconference women's hockey action at LFC's Alumni Memorial Rink on Saturday afternoon.
Augsburg hit the 40 mark in shots on goal for the second straight game, outshooting Lake Forest by a 41-30 margin to improve to 2-1 on the season. Lake Forest drops to 1-4-1 overall.
Auggie newcomers continued to take the lead in scoring on the weekend.
Kristin Murr (Fr., Thornton, Colo./Quest Academy HS) picked up her second point of the season -- and her first collegiate goal, on an unassisted tally at the 8:50 mark.
Stacy Anderson (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) scored her second goal of the weekend on a power-play goal at the 19:45 mark of the second period, on assists from
Melynda Kleewein (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) and
Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.).
Carrie Velenchenko (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) notched her first goal fo the season at the 2:47 mark of the third period to complete the Auggie scoring.
Augsburg's defense stopped all five Lake Forest power-play opportunities, and Johnson stopped all 30 saves she faced to notch the shutout, including 13 in the second period and 10 in the final stanza. Theresa Taylor made 38 saves in a losing effort for Lake Forest.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a two-game series against Hamline University on Thursday (11/20) and Friday (11/21). Thursday's game is at 7 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul, a date change from previously published schedules. Friday's game is the home opener and part of a men's and women's hockey doubleheader at the Augsburg Ice Arena. The women's game is at 5:05 p.m., with the men's hockey game against Wisconsin-Eau Claire following at 8:05 p.m.
