MINNEAPOLIS (11/5/04) -- Augsburg College's
Jocelyn Cookson (Jr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) scored on a power-play goal at the third-period buzzer, forcing overtime and resulting in a 4-4 overtime tie with visiting Lake Forest College in a nonconference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Lake Forest had rallied from a 3-2 deficit to score twice in the final six minutes of regulation, including an unassisted, power-play goal by Darby McGrath (So., Chippawa, Ontario) with 44 seconds left in the third period.
Augsburg took advantage of a Lake Forest penalty with 31 seconds left. Cookson, in her first Augsburg game after playing her first two seasons at Division I Wisconsin, scored on a scramble in front off a draw in the final second of play, on assists from
Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) and Lauren Chezick (Sr., Hastings, Minn.). The goal was initially allowed by one referee but waved off by the other. But after a conference, the goal was allowed, forcing overtime.
Augsburg outshot Lake Forest by a 5-4 margin in the overtime session, but neither team could score, resulting in the tie.
The game was the first of the season for both teams.
Lake Forest opened the scoring in the first period, when Ali Neal (Fr., Wolfboro Falls, N.H./Holderness School) scored from Erin McGrath (Jr., Chippawa, Ontario) and Laura Wilson (Fr., Coronna, Ontario).
Augsburg tied the game early in the second period on the power play, as Anderson scored the first of her two power-play goals in the game, on assists from
Laura Prasek (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) and Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS), at the 6:23 mark. Augsburg scored five minutes later to take the lead, as
Carrie Velenchenko (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored from
Jenny Schmidt (Fr., North St. Paul, Minn.).
The Foresters tied the game early in the second period, as the McGrath sisters combined for a goal, with Darby McGrath scoring from Erin McGrath. But Augsburg took the lead back on the power play, as Anderson scored from Kleewein at the 8:49 mark.
Lake Forest took advantage of an Auggie turnover on the power play to score a shorthanded goal, as Courtney DeHoey (Fr., Chatham, Ontario) scored at the 14:03 mark to tie the game, setting the stage for the wild final minute of regulation.
Augsburg outshot Lake Forest by a 28-22 margin. Sally Bevis (So., Huntington, N.Y.) made 24 saves for Lake Forest, while
Kristin Johnson (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 18 saves for the Auggies.
The teams complete the season-opening series on Saturday (11/6) at 2:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
