Augsburg opens season with 1-1 overtime tie with Lake Forest (Ill.)

MINNEAPOLIS (11/4/06) -- Making her collegiate debut, Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) collected 38 saves in goal, as the Augsburg College women's hockey team scored a 2-2 tie with Lake Forest College (Ill.) in a nonconference contest Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Augsburg took a 2-0 lead after two periods, but Lake Forest rallied with two goals in the third period to tie the game. Both teams had four shots in overtime. Lake Forest survived a 5-on-3 Augsburg power-play in the final 43 seconds of the overtime period.

It was the first game of the season for both teams. Lake Forest outshot Augsburg by a 40-20 margin.

Augsburg jumped on the scoreboard early, as Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) scored just 24 seconds into the contest on a rush to the goal from Caryn Quist (So., St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS).

The Auggies added to the lead in the second period, as Marie Johnson (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), a transfer from Gustavus, scored her first collegiate goal on an unassisted tally.

But Lake Forest rallied in the third period to tie the game, outshooting the Auggies by a 16-3 margin in the frame. Laura Wilson (Jr., Corunna, Ontario) scored from Jamie Sauer (Fr., Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines HS) at the 3:23 mark of the period, then Jen Clouthier (Jr., Aurora, Ill./Chicago Mission HS) tied the game on a goal from Courtney DeHoey (Jr., Chatham, Ontario) at the 9:43 mark.

Sally Bevis (Sr., Huntington, N.Y.) claimed 18 saves in goal for Lake Forest.

Lake Forest completes its season-opening trip to the Twin Cities on Sunday (11/5) with a 2 p.m. game at Hamline.

Augsburg returns to action next Saturday (11/11) at 2:15 p.m., hosting Wisconsin-River Falls at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
