MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College football tight end Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.), defensive back/wide receiver Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and quarterback Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) were named to preseason elite football teams recently.

Carl and Bourne-McFarlane were named to the preseason All-Division III Team by the Lindy's Sports Annuals' 2013 National College Football preview magazine, while Carl and Scott were named to the Division III Preseason All-America team by the Beyond Sports Network website. 

On the Lindy's Sports Annuals' listing, Carl was named as a first-team tight end, while Bourne-McFarlane was named as a second-team safety. Fifty players were selected to the two teams by the national preview magazine. It's the second straight year that Carl has earned a spot on the Lindy's squad, after being named as a second-team selection last year. Augsburg has now had five players selected to the preseason All-Division III Team by Lindy's since 2006; Mike Matson '07 was named in 2006 as a first-team linebacker, while Royce Winford '09 was named in 2008 as a first-team wide receiver.

On the Beyond Sports Network Division III Preseason All-America listing, Carl was named to the first team, while Scott was named to the second team. 

Carl earned D3football.com All-America first-team and Beyond Sports Network All-America honorable-mention recognition last season, while earning All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team honors for the second straight year. He was also named to the D3football.com All-West Region team for the second straight year, a first-team selection in 2012 and second-team selection in 2011.

In 2012, Carl finished fourth among MIAC players in receiving yardage in overall statistics, with a team-best 640 receiving yards on 53 catches (second-most among MIAC players). His eight touchdown receptions were fourth-most among MIAC players, with all three totals tops among conference tight ends. Carl also had one rushing touchdown. Carl had four 100-yard receiving games in 2012, while he scored touchdowns in five of his 10 games.

In his 28-game collegiate career, Carl has 112 receptions for 1,257 yards and 15 touchdowns (14 receiving, one rushing).

Carl has earned All-MIAC and all-region honors in both football and baseball in his Augsburg career. Carl has earned All-MIAC honors in both 2012 and 2013, while earning American Baseball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region second-team honors in 2012.

Bourne-McFarlane was an All-MIAC second-team selection and D3football.com All-West Region third-team selection in 2012.  A wide receiver his first two seasons as an Auggie, Bourne-McFarlane shifted to defense in 2012 as a defensive back. He played on both sides of the football, as both a defensive back and as a receiver, later in the season.

He finished the 2012 season fifth on the team in tackles with 50 (28 solo), while recording a team-best five interceptions and eight passes defensed (three pass breakups), including one interception returned for a touchdown. His five interceptions were tied for second-most among MIAC players in overall statistics this season.

On offense, Bourne-McFarlane caught 14 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. He also served as one of Augsburg's primary kick and punt returners, returning 17 kicks for 381 yards (22.4 yards per-return, third-best among MIAC players) and a touchdown, while returning 11 punts for 117 yards (10.6 yards per-return, third-best among MIAC players). His 776 all-purpose yards were third-most on the team. In his 30 career games as an Auggie, Bourne-McFarlane has 98 receptions for 1,304 yards and 10 touchdowns, while claiming 53 tackles (30 solo) and six interceptions in his career.

Scott was an All-MIAC first-team selection and D3football.com All-West Region third-team selection in 2012. Scott was one of only two first-year players named among the 74 student-athletes named to the two All-MIAC teams, and the lone first-year player among the 37 named to the All-MIAC first team. He was one of only two first-year players among the 75 players named to the D3football.com All-West Region squad.

Scott had one of the most dynamic seasons of any first-year player in the nation in 2012, setting a single-season school record for rushing yardage, rushing for 1,436 yards on 209 carries. His 143.6 rushing yards per-game average ranks him eighth among NCAA Division III players nationally (the only first-year player among the top 29 rushers nationally). Combined with his 2,245 passing yards, Scott's 368.1 yards of total offense per-game were third-most among Division III players nationally this season. He had 300-plus yards of total offense in seven games this season.

Scott led the MIAC in rushing yardage (overall games), as one of only two conference players to record more than 1,000 rushing yards in 2012. His 209 carries were tops among MIAC players (fourth-most in a single season in school history) and his 12 rushing touchdowns were third-most among MIAC players. Scott rushed for 100-plus yards in nine of his 10 games. In league games-only, Scott had 1,114 rushing yards – the lone MIAC player to record 1,000 rushing yards or more in eight conference games. Scott's 224.5 passing yards per-game were second-most among MIAC quarterbacks in 2012, while his 26 touchdown passes led the league. He completed 173-of-283 passes and had just 12 interceptions.

Under head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 7-3 overall, 5-3 in MIAC play in 2012 -- the best overall record for the Auggies since finishing 10-2 overall (9-1 MIAC) in its 1997 MIAC championship season. The 7-3 record also marked Augsburg's second straight above-.500 overall finish -- the first time Augsburg has finished above-.500 in consecutive seasons since a three-year stretch from 1997 to 1999.

Augsburg opens its 2013 season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m., with a nonconference game at Concordia-Wisconsin. Augsburg's home opener is on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m., as the Auggies host Gustavus at Edor Nelson Field.
