2012 D3FOOTBALL.COM ALL-AMERICA TEAM
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College tight end
Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) was named to the D3football.com All-America Team as a first-team recipient, it was announced on Friday.
The D3football.com All-America team is awarded by
D3football.com, a national website that covers NCAA Division III football.
The award caps a year of impressive honors for Carl. The honors started during the summer, when Carl was named to both the
D3football.com Preseason All-America Team and to the
preseason Lindy's Sports All-Division III Team, both as a second-team tight end.
Following the season, Carl earned
All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team honors for the second year in a row, and was named to the
D3football.com All-West Region Team for the second straight year, this year as a first-team recipient after earning second-team honors last year. Last week, Carl was also named as an
honorable-mention Division III All-American by the Beyond Sports College Network website.
In 2012, Carl finished
fourth among MIAC players in receiving yardage in overall statistics, with a team-best 640 receiving yards on 53 catches (second-most among MIAC players). His eight touchdown receptions were fourth-most among MIAC players, with all three totals tops among conference tight ends. Carl also had one rushing touchdown this season. Carl had four 100-yard receiving games this season, while he scored touchdowns in five of his 10 games.
In his 28-game collegiate career, Carl has 112 receptions for 1,257 yards and 15 touchdowns (14 receiving, one rushing).
Carl has earned All-MIAC and all-region honors in both football and baseball in his Augsburg career. In his first year as Augsburg's starting shortstop in 2012, Carl earned
All-MIAC and
American Baseball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region second-team honors.
Carl is the ninth Augsburg player to earn All-America honors from D3football.com since the site began awarding All-America honors in 1999. Wide receiver Muneer Al-Hameed and tight end Josh Pronschinske both earned honorable-mention honors in 2010. Wide receiver Royce Winford earned first-team honors in 2008 and second-team honors in 2007. Punter Nick Schlieman was an honorable-mention honoree in both 2003 and 2005. Linebacker
Mike Matson was a third-team honoree in 2005, and defensive back Jake Kern was a second-team honoree in 1999.
Under eighth-year head coach
Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 7-3 overall, 5-3 in MIAC play in 2012 -- the best overall record for the Auggies since finishing 10-2 overall (9-1 MIAC) in its 1997 MIAC championship season. The 7-3 record also marks Augsburg's second straight above-.500 overall finish -- the first time Augsburg has finished above-.500 in consecutive seasons since a three-year stretch from 1997 to 1999.
Carl was one of nine MIAC players named to the D3football.com All-America squad. Joining Carl on the first team was St. Thomas senior center Curtis James, Bethel junior linebacker Sean Mathis and St. John's senior cornerback Bobby Fischer. Named to the third team was Concordia-Moorhead senior offensive tackle Tom Knowlton and St. Thomas senior tight end Ayo Idowu. Named to the fourth team was St. Thomas junior linebacker Tremayne Williams, St. Thomas senior safety Chinni Oji and St. John's senior kicker Jimmie Mattson.
