Scott is MIAC MVP, 11 Auggies earn MIAC football honors

2015 MIAC FOOTBALL AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College quarterback Ayrton Scott (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) was named the recipient of the 2015 Jim Christopherson Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Most Valuable Player Award, part of a group of 11 Auggies who earned MIAC honors for the 2015 football season, it was announced on Tuesday.

Scott is the fourth Auggie to receive the MIAC's MVP award since 1997, joining Derrin Lamker (1997), Scott Hvistendahl (1998) and Royce Winford (2008). The award, named for former Concordia-Moorhead head coach Jim Christopherson, is voted on by conference coaches.

Scott earned a spot on the All-MIAC first team, joining Augsburg wide receiver Joey Sonnenfeld (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and offensive lineman Bob Rose (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS). Augsburg running back Tyrell Martin (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), offensive lineman Zach Swingen (SR, Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton HS) and defensive lineman Tyler Sis (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) earned All-MIAC second-team designation.

Defensive back Bobby Collins (JR, Lompoc, Calif.), linebacker Mykar Groves (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Simley HS), offensive lineman Andrew Konieczny (JR, Tomah, Wis.) and linebacker Alan Medina-Gonzalez (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Tartan HS) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors. Running back Derek Ruff (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Scott earned All-MIAC first-team honors for the fourth straight year, while Sonnenfeld earned first-team honors for the third straight season. Swingen repeated his All-MIAC second-team selection from last year, while Rose and Medina-Gonzalez were both All-MIAC honorable-mention honorees last year. It's the first MIAC football honors for Collins, Groves, Konieczny and Ruff.

In its 11th season under Head Coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 5-5 overall, 4-4 in MIAC play in 2015, winning three of its last four games down the stretch.

1046810232Scott completed his career as one of the top quarterbacks in MIAC history, redefining the role of the quarterback in Augsburg's offense as both a passer and runner. This season, Scott rushed 201 times for 1,290 yards and nine touchdowns, while completing 171-of-271 passes for 2,395 yards and 22 touchdowns -- his fourth straight year with 2,200-plus passing yards and 202-plus touchdowns. Among MIAC players in overall statistics, Scott finished second in passing yardage per-game (239.5) and third in passing touchdowns, while finishing third in rushing yardage per-game (129.0), with his 6.4 yards per-carry average tied for tops among MIAC players. Among NCAA Division III players nationally, he stands second in total offense yards per-game (368.5), 20th in "points responsible for" per-game (19.4), 22nd in rushing yards, 23rd in rushing yards per-game and 32nd in rushing yards per-carry. He rushed for 100-plus yards seven times and had eight games with 300-plus yards (three games with 400-plus yards) of total offense this season.

Scott closed his career as Augsburg's school record-holder for rushing attempts (722), rushing yardage (4,242) and rushing touchdowns (37), along with passing yardage (10,281) and passing touchdowns (97), while standing second in school history in passing attempts (1,238) and completions (746). In MIAC games-only through his career, he set conference records for passing yardage (8,430) and total offense (11,725), while also holding MIAC records for single-game total offense (630) and single-season total offense (3,114 in 2014).

He set a new NCAA Division III record for rushing yardage by a quarterback (4,242), while finishing second in Division III history in total offense (14,523 yards) and total offense yardage per-game (363.1). He also set a new Division III record with 31 games with 300-plus yards of total offense. In 2012, he set a Division III record for most yards gained by a first-year player (3,681). He stands 27th in Division III history in both career passing yardage (10,281) and passing touchdowns (97). Among NCAA football players in all divisions, Scott stands fifth in total offense yardage per-game (363.1) and 21st in total offense yardage (10,281).
 
1034910653Sonnenfeld also had a milestone year for the Auggies as a wide receiver, catching 73 passes for 1,244 yards and 12 touchdowns, finishing second among MIAC receivers in overall statistics in all three receiving categories. He finished the season with nine straight games with 100-plus receiving yards, bringing his Auggie career total to 21 (30 games played). His 124.4 receiving yards per-game stands eighth among Division III players nationally, while he stands 10th in receiving yardage, 19th in receptions per-game (7.3) and 22nd in receiving touchdowns.

In his three seasons at Augsburg after transferring from North Dakota State, Sonnenfeld finished with 210 receptions for 3,550 yards and 39 touchdowns, standing second in school history in career receiving yardage, third in career receiving touchdowns and fourth in career receptions. His 1,244 yards this season were fourth-best in a single season in school history.
 
10339102451031310655Rose, Swingen and Konieczny were anchors of an Augsburg offensive line that helped produce 5,038 yards of total offense (503.8 yards per-game), second-best among MIAC players in overall statistics. The Auggies had the top rushing offense in the conference, averaging 263.4 yards per-game, while its 240.4 passing yards per-game was third-best. The Auggie offensive line allowed just 10 sacks and 52 tackles for-loss in 2015.

 
10657In Rose and Swingen's four seasons, Augsburg produced 18,795 yards of total offense (469.9 yards per-game), including 8,366 rushing yards (209.2 per-game) and 10,429 passing yards (260.7 per-game), while allowing just 44 sacks and 166 tackles for-loss. Rose also had a rushing touchdown in Augsburg's season-ending win over Bethel on Nov. 14.

In Konieczny's three seasons as an Auggie, Augsburg has produced 14,083 yards of total offense (469.4 yards per-game), including 5,987 rushing yards (199.6 per-game) and 8,096 passing yards (269.9), while allowing 38 sacks and 135 tackles for-loss.

A chemistry and biology major with a 3.97 grade-point average, Swingen also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this season, after earning both Academic All-District and Academic All-America second-team honors last season.
 
1032110654Martin had a career year for the Auggies this season as the team's primary running back, rushing 160 times for 1,022 yards and a team-best 16 touchdowns, while also catching 31 passes for 306 yards. His 102.2 rushing yards per-game is fifth-best among MIAC rushers in overall statistics, as were his 160 rushes. His 6.4 yards per-carry average was tied with teammate Scott for tops among MIAC rushers. Augsburg was the only team in the MIAC with two rushers to average 100-plus yards per-game this season. Martin's 16 rushing touchdowns were sixth-best among MIAC rushers. He had six games with 100-plus rushing yards this season and two games with 150-plus rushing yards.

In his 18-game Augsburg football career, he finished with 170 carries for 1,058 yards and 18 touchdowns. Martin was also an NCAA Division III national tournament qualifier for the Augsburg wrestling team, finishing 20-6 last season at 174 pounds for Augsburg's national championship squad.
 
1034810656Sis was a strong force on the Augsburg defensive line this season, finishing with 39 tackles (13 solo), including a team-best 8.0 tackles for-loss (25 yards) and a team-best-tying 2.0 sacks (10 yards). He also led the Auggies with three fumble recoveries, while also adding a forced fumble, blocked kick and pass breakup. His 8.0 tackles for-loss were tied for eighth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics. He had six games with five-plus tackles this season.

In his Augsburg career (30 games), Sis finished with 104 tackles (35 solo), including 18.0 tackles for-loss, 4.0 sacks, three fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles, three pass breakups and a blocked kick.
 
10279A transfer from Allen Hancock Community College (Calif.), Collins finished his first Auggie season with 50 tackles (39 solo), with 2.0 tackles for-loss, an interception, pass breakup, forced fumble and fumble recovery. He also had 10 kickoff returns for 221 yards, a 22.1 yards-per-return average. He also scored a defensive two-point conversion in Augsburg's win at Hamline on Nov. 7. He had five games with six or more tackles this season.
 
10294Groves finished the season with 42 tackles (18 solo), including 7.5 tackles for-loss (24 yards), the second-best total on the team. He also had a team-best-tying 2.0 sacks (10 yards) on the year, with five games with four or more tackles. In his two seasons as an Auggie after transferring from the North Dakota School of Science (20 games), he finished with 91 tackles (42 solo), with 10.0 tackles for-loss, 2.5 sacks, an interception, pass breakup, forced fumble and fumble recovery.
 
10324Medina-Gonazlez had another solid season as a starting linebacker, finishing third on the team in tackles with 53 (17 solo), including 4.0 tackles for-loss (16 yards), 1.5 sacks (9 yards), a pass breakup and a forced fumble. He had seven games with five or more tackles this season. A three-year starter for the Auggies (34 games), Medina-Gonzalez finished with 140 career tackles (58 solo), including 8.5 tackles for-loss, 3.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a pass breakup.
