Swingen named CoSIDA Academic All-District

ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FOOTBALL TEAMS (CoSIDA)

10245MINNEAPOLIS -- For the second straight year, Augsburg College football offensive lineman Zach Swingen (SR, Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton HS) was named to the Academic All-District 6 Division III Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Thursday. Swingen is a chemistry and biology major with a 3.97 grade-point average.

Last year, Swingen earned Academic All-America second-team honors, in addition to earning All-MIAC second-team honors. He is also a two-time Academic All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree.

Swingen is a four-year starter, having started 34 games so far in his career. He is part of an offensive line that currently stands third
among MIAC teams in total offense yardage per-game (494.6), while standing first in rushing yardage per-game (259.5) and third in passing yardage per-game (235.1), while surrendering just 11 sacks and 39 tackles for-loss. Over the past four seasons, Augsburg has averaged 466.2 yards of total offense per-game (205.5 rushing, 260.7 passing), while allowing just 44 sacks and 162 tackles for-loss.

Currently 3-5 overall and 2-4 in MIAC play this season, Augsburg travels to face Hamline on Saturday (11/7) at 1 p.m. The Auggies close their season on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m., hosting Bethel at Edor Nelson Field.

The Academic All-District team is part of the Academic All-America program, as selected by CoSIDA. Top student-athletes from Division III programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are eligible for inclusion on the District 6 team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams.

This is the fifth year of the expanded Academic All-America program, as CoSIDA has moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I), doubling the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members. The Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2015-16 Division III Academic All-America teams program.
