Mark Matzek (Augsburg ‘05), a two-time individual national champion and three-time All-American wrestler during his Augsburg College career, will enter his fifth season as the head coach of the Augsburg College wresling team in 2012-13. In addition to his coaching duties, Matzek also serves as co-director of athletic academic support services for the athletic department.

Augsburg Coaching Highlights:
2011-12: led team to second-place finish at the NCAA National Championships with one individual national champion and five All-Americans; sophomore Chad Johnson earned his first individual national title in the heavyweight division; recorded 10th consecutive Great Lakes Regional team Championship with five individual titles; recorded second-place finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals; achieved the highest team grade-point average in Division III wrestling, earning the NWCA's Scholar All-America Team Award title for the second time in school history as 10 academic national team members combined for a team GPA of 3.734; GPA senior Tony Valek was selected as the NCAA Elite 89 Award winner as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average at the national championships.
2010-11: led team to second-place finish at the NCAA National Championships with one individual national champion and five All-Americans; senior Zach Molitor won his first individual national title at 174 pounds; recorded ninth consecutive Great Lakes Region Championship with three weight class champions; recorded third-place finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals; recorded fifth-best team grade-point average among all NCAA Division III wrestling programs.
2009-10: claimed 11th national title in school history with eight All-Americans and seven top-four finishers at the NCAA National Championship Meet; named Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and became the youngest head coach to ever win a Division III wrestling national title; recorded eighth consecutive Great Lakes Regional Championship with seven individual weight class champions; captured fifth National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals title; completed the regular season with a perfect 12-0 dual meet record for the 11th time in school history.
2008-09: recorded second-place finish at the NCAA National Championships with one individual national champion and seven All-Americans; junior Jared Massey won his first individual national title at 197 pounds; recorded seventh consecutive Great Lakes Regional Championship with four weight class champions; claimed fourth National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals championship; completed regular season with 11-2 dual meet record including two wins over eventual national champion Wartburg; finished 13th in the NWCA's Division III academic national listings with a 3.346 team grade-point average.  

In his tenure as head coach, the Auggies have claimed the 2010 national title, as well as second-place finishes in 2009, 2011 and 2012. and two third-place team finishes, with 26 All-Americans and three individual national champions. In 2010, Matzek was named Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, after becoming the youngest head coach (age 27) to ever win a Division III wrestling national title. He has also led the Auggies to NWCA Division III National Duals titles in 2009 and 2010.

Wrestling Experience/Achievements:
As one of the top lightweight wrestlers in Augsburg history, Matzek earned 133-pound All-American honors three times and won national titles twice in his career, finishing with a 129-21 record. In 2002-03, he finished fourth nationally with a 40-7 record, then won his first national title in the 2003-04 season, finishing 35-4. He finished his career with a 42-match winning streak, which included a 34-0 mark in his senior season as he repeated as national champion -- joining a select group of nine Auggie wrestlers in school history to win multiple national championships.

He was a member of Auggie squads that won the national title as a team in 2002 and 2005, while finishing second nationally in 2003 and 2004.

Academically, Matzek was a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American, an ESPN The Magazine (CoSIDA) Academic All-District honoree three times, and an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American (CoSIDA) first-team selection in 2005. He was named an Augsburg Honor Athlete in 2005, and was a member of Augsburg academic national teams in wrestling that ranked sixth twice (2003, 2005) and third (2004) in team grade-point-average nationally.

Personal/Family Notes:
Mark and his wife Jessica (Augsburg '05) reside in Eagan, Minn.. Matzek received his bachelor's degree in mathmatics and education from Augsburg in 2005, and completed his graduate work in Organizational Management with Sports Management emphasis at Concordia University-St. Paul in 2009.
