AUGGIE EAGLE APPEARANCE REQUEST FORM

What is an Auggie?
That's one of the most frequently asked questions we receive. Augsburg University history is not clear on the subject of when the term "Auggies" was first used to refer to the university's athletic teams, or who first coined the term. The first usages of the term appear in the university's yearbook (the Augsburgian) and the student newspaper (the Echo) in the mid-1920s, shortly after intercollegiate athletics started at Augsburg.

As is the case with many of our sister schools in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the nickname "Auggies" appears to be an extension of the school name; much like the St. John's "Johnnies," St. Olaf "Oles," Gustavus Adolphus "Gusties" and so on.

Note that the team's nickname is AUGGIES, not AGGIES. Texas A&M and a handful of other schools use AGGIES as the nickname for their athletic teams.

The eagle has often been associated with Auggie athletic teams -- since a baby eagle is often referred to as an "Auggie." Augsburg has used different eagle designs for athletic logos through the years. The circular Auggie Eagle athletic logo was designed by Augsburg alumnus and former student-athlete Sammy Gross '03, and was made the official athletic logo in 2005 (it had actually been used since 2002, but made official in 2005). When Augsburg changed its name from Augsburg College to Augsburg University in 2017, Gross redesigned the logo to its current format, creating a complete branding system for the university's athletic department and teams.
