Offensive Fireworks Give Auggies Big Win Over Bethel, Sole Possession of 1997 MIAC Championship

Augsburg 56 Bethel 22

In 1996, Augsburg's football team ended its season with a 53-19 loss to Bethel College in the Metrodome. In 1997, Augsburg's final regular season game was also against Bethel at the Metrodome, this time however, the outcome was different...very different. Augsburg scored touchdowns on eight of ten possesions, and converted 10-11 first downs, as the Auggies crushed the Royals 56-22.

Wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl led the Augsburg offensive attack, scoring one touchdown rushing and one touchdown receiving. Hvistendahl caught six passes for 190 yards, while rushing the ball three times for 55 yards. Andrew Anthony had 113 of Augsburg's 253 yards and one touchdown. Anthony's performance is Augsburg's first 100-yard game of the year.

The defense was led by freshman linebacker Justin Hipple. Hipple, who was named MIAC-Player of the Week, had 11 tackles, including one for loss. Safety Jake Kern intercepted his seventh pass of the year.

Augsburg, now 9-1, won the outright MIAC title for the first time ever. Augsburg, ranked 3rd in the West Regional, should advance to the Divsion III National Playoffs for the first time ever.
