Turnover's Kill Auggies in MIAC Opener

Auggies 12 St. Thomas 28

Augsburg held a 6-3 halftime lead before a second half rally by St. Thomas put the Auggies hope for an upset to rest. Five turnovers wrecked Augsburg's momentum and helped St. Thomas to a 28-12 victory in the teams' Minnesota Intercollgiate Athletic Conference opener.

Two field goals by Junior kicker Martin Hlinka provided the Auggie offensive punch. Augsburg lacked its big playmaker, All-American Receiver Scott Hvistendahl, and had trouble getting into the end zone. Senior quarterback Derrin Lamker picked up the load, completing 27 of 42 passes for 312 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Tim Hamer was Lamker's favorite target, with 9 receptions for 142 yards. Tight end Ted Shultz scored the lone Auggie touchdown on a two yard touchdown reception.

Freshman linebacker Justin Hipple made an impressive MIAC debut with 11 tackles. Safety Jake Kern also had a busy day with 10 tackles. The Auggie defense held the tommies to only 91 first-half yards, but wasn't able to contain St. Thomas for the whole game.
