College Football Oct. 10 -- Gustavus 21, Augsburg 7
(story courtesy of Gustavus Sports Information)
ST. PETER, Minn. -- On a record-breaking Saturday afternoon, the Gustavus Adolphus College Golden Gusties improved to 5-0 on the season with a 21-7 MIAC victory over the guest Augsburg College Auggies. The Gusties are undefeated this deep into the season for the first time since 1987.
Senior quarterback Bob Southworth found senior wide receiver Chris Barnick on a 13-yard fade route with 7:11 remaining in the game to foil a second half comeback attempt by Augsburg. On Gustavus' first pass play, Southworth broke the all-time school record for completions in a career on a quick out to Barnick. The record of 437 had been held by Dean Kraus, who played for the Gusties from 1985 through 1988. Later on that drive. Southworth completed a deep pass down the middle to senior receiver Chris Swansson with 10:03 remaining in the first quarter. That score for Swansson broke the school record for touchdown receptions in a career with 18. The record had been previously set by John Huepenbecker with 17, achieved from 1976 to 1979. The fourth quarter scoring pass from to Barnick gave Southworth enough passing yards to capture the school's career mark in that category, surpassing Kraus' 5,760 yards he piled up in his career.
Augsburg's senior wide-out
Scott Hvistendahl approached NCAA Division III records with his 14 catches for 198 yards and a score. He brought his career receptions total to 217 and his career receiving yards to 3,649, placing him at eighth place in the Division III record books. The all-time record for receiving yards in NCAA Division III is 4,311 yards by Curt Barth of Eureka College, who set the record a year ago.
The Gusties were led offensively by Southworth, who finished 23-of-31 passing for 289 yards with two touchdowns and only one interception. Gustie receivers were led by Swansson, who finished with seven catches for 118 yards and one score on the day. Barnick also chipped in with five receptions for 52 yards and the one touchdown. Gustavus' running backs also had big days against the Auggies, as junior Travis Prunty finished with 25 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown, and junior Ryan Britz picked up 46 yards on nine carries and another 64 yards on five catches.
Hvistendahl's 14 catches and 198 yards led Augsburg pass receivers, and senior receiver
Tim Hamer added 65 yards of his own on six receptions. Sophomore quarterback
Paul Tetzloff was 21-of-34 for 266 yards on the day, including a 72-yard bomb to Hvistendahl for a touchdown. Gustavus picked Tetzloff off only once on the afternoon.
Solid play by both defenses kept scoring below what was expected. Gustavus' senior cornerback Brian Sorum finished the day with seven tackles, a pass break-up, and a fumble recovery. Sophomore defensive end Tim Sundby added to the Gustie cause by accumulating seven tackles of his own, including two sacks.
Auggie defenders were led by sophomore linebacker
Joe Souba, who led all players with 10 tackles on the day. Sophomore
Kurt Werk tallied nine tackles for Augsburg and also picked up a fumble recovery.

===============FINAL SCORE==============
AUGSBURG COLLEGE 7, GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS 21
========================================
Pregame Media Notes:
The Augsburg College Auggies (3-1 overall, 2-1 MIAC) face Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Gustavus Adolphus College (4-0 overall, 3-0 MIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
Stadium: Hollingsworth Field (cap., 5,500).
Coaches: Augsburg,
Jack Osberg (8th season, 37-38); Gustavus, Jay Schoenebeck (5th season, 19-26).
Series: Gustavus leads 43-12-0. Last year, Augsburg beat Gustavus 41-35 in two overtimes at Hollingsworth Field.
Broadcast: Augsburg broadcast on KKMS-AM 980 with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. Gustavus broadcast on KRBI-AM 1310, FM 105.5 with Clay Kepner and Tim Kennedy.
Outlook: Augsburg and Gustavus were the two big stories of last season in the MIAC, as both moved up from the bottom of the conference to make runs to the top. Last year, the two teams locked horns in what was possibly the best game of the year in the conference, with Augsburg emerging victorious 41-35 in two overtimes.
This year's game could again shape up to be one of the best games in the conference again, as both teams enter the game with solid offenses and stingy defenses. Gustavus, at a perfect 4-0 overall, is paced by the play of QB Bob Southworth, who has completed 60 percent of his passes for 816 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. His key receivers are Chris Swansson (19 catches, 247 yards, 4 TDs), Greg TeBrake (13 catches, 132 yards, 1 TD) and Chris Barnick (12 catches, 104 yards). Travis Prunty (64 rushes, 280 yards, 3 TDs) and Ryan Britz (22 rushes, 159 yards, 2 TDs) have been the Gusties' top rushers. Gustavus' offense averages 372.33 total yards per game.
On defense, the Gusties have the top-ranked defense in the MIAC, allowing just an average of 200 yards per game. DT Brent Staples (24 tackles, four sacks) and LB Ryan Timm (23 tackles, one sack) have been the defensive stalwarts.
Augsburg will come into Saturday's contest with a defense that has shown tremendous improvement (third in the MIAC in total defense, allowing 259.67 yards per game), but with an offense that has yet to find the complete spark effectively in three MIAC contests. Augsburg's offense, tops last year in the MIAC, is fifth in the league's rankings going into Saturday's contest, putting together 316 yards per game.
Augsburg drops first game of year to St. John's in defensive struggle
MINNEAPOLIS Ben Sieben (Jr., Melrose, Minn.) caught a 20-yard pass from Tom Linnemann (So., Melrose, Minn.) with 5:15 remaining, giving St. John's University a 19-13 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday night at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Linnemann, who completed 19 of 29 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown and one interception, tied the game himself with 12:22 left in the fourth quarter, scampering on a 10-yard run to complete a seven-play, 54-yard drive.
Augsburg had led the game 10-0 at halftime, coming on first-quarter scores from
Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia/Farmington HS) and
Jim Peterson (Sr., Eyota, Minn./Dover-Eyota HS). Hlinka nailed a 43-yard field goal, while Peterson caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from
Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.). Hlinka's second field goal for the Auggies, a 21-yarder that completed an 11-play, 74-yard drive, came in the third quarter.
Augsburg forced three first-half turnovers by St. John's, but the Johnnies only gave up one other turnover in the contest. Augsburg's Tetzloff threw one interception.
The Johnnie defense shut down Augsburg wide receiver
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS), limiting him to 68 yards on seven receptions. The yardage mark broke a 10-game streak of receiving yardage totals of 100 yards or more.
Thane Drier (Sr., Durand, Wis.) paced the Auggies with 49 yards rushing on 12 attempts.
Tim Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) had 86 yards on eight receptions. Tetzloff, who made his first start since missing last week's win over St. Olaf with a hyperextended elbow injury, completed 22 of 48 passes for 214 yards.
Andy Zigan (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) led the Auggies with 12 tackles (eight solo). He also was credited with blocking two extra points.
Jake Kern (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had 10 tackles (six solo) and
Terry Gullette (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had three sacks.
The Hvistendahl Watch: Auggie WR now 10th in D-III receiving yards
Augsburg WR
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) saw his 10-game streak of games with 100 or more receiving yards end on Saturday night against St. John's, but his 68-yard, seven-reception performance kept him on pace to make his mark on the NCAA Division III receiving record book.
Hvistendahl, who holds every Augsburg career and single-season receiving record, topped the 200-reception mark on Saturday and moved into 10th place in the NCAA Division III career receiving yardage list, with 3,451 yards on 203 receptions. The Division III record is 4,311 yards, set by Curt Barth of Eureka (Ill.) from 1994-97. Jeff Clay of Catholic (D.C.) also went over the 4,000-yard mark last year, with 4,101 career yards (1994-97). They are the only two Division III receivers to achieve the feat; in fact, only 11 receivers in the four NCAA divisions have surpassed the 4,000-yard barrier. Jerry Rice, who starred for Mississippi Valley State (Division I-AA) from 1981 to 1984 before becoming the NFL's top receiver, amassed 4,693 yards and 50 touchdowns on 301 receptions to hold the NCAA all-divisions career yardage record.
Hvistendahl, who is currently rated fourth in the Division III national statistics in receiving yards per game, is currently on pace (153.8 receiving yards per game) to top the 4,000-yard mark against Bethel at Augsburg on Nov. 7, and possibly break the Division III mark in the final game of the regular season, against Concordia-Moorhead on Nov. 13 at the Metrodome. Division III national records are for regular-season games only.
Augsburg kicker
Martin Hlinka set to break records Saturday
Augsburg kicker
Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia) has yet to miss in 1998. Five-for-five on field goals, 14-for-14 on extra points. His continued perfection could put him into the Augsburg record book as the top kicker in school history as early as Saturday, when the Auggies face Gustavus and one of the nation's top Division III kickers, Ryan Boutwell.
Hlinka is currently tied with Dave Warnke (1980-82) for the school record for career field goals, with 17, and is second to Warnke with 104 kicking points. Warnke had 106 kicking points in his career. Hlinka also has 53 career PATs, second to Warnke's 55. Hlinka set Augsburg single-season records for field goals (eight), PATs (31) and kicking points (55) last year.
Hlinka is currently third in the nation in field goals per game (1.25 average), and is one of only eight kickers on the Division III top 30 list to not miss a field goal this season. The top perfection mark so far this year, 7-for-7, is held by Tony Licavoli of Concordia-Mequon (Wis.).
Hlinka also has been a starting forward on Augsburg's men's hockey team for the past three seasons. The Auggies claimed their first MIAC regular-season championship since 1983, along with their first-ever MIAC playoff title last season, and finished fourth in the nation in the NCAA Division III national tournament.
Augsburg defense shines, rated among top defenses in MIAC
Augsburg's football team has been known in recent years for its high-powered offense. But this year, it's been the defense that has quietly kept Augsburg in the hunt for its second consecutive MIAC championship.
Augsburg's defense has allowed 259.67 yards of offense per game against MIAC opponents, good for third in the conference. Augsburg's defense has especially shined in the turnover department, where the Auggies are currently rated third in the NCAA Division III national statistical rankings in turnover margin -- a plus-2.50 per game (19 takeaways, nine giveaways).
Andy Howard (So., Waseca, Minn.) has been the stalwart of the Auggie defense from his linebacker position this season, with 35 tackles (15 solo), three tackles for loss and an interception return for a touchdown. CB
Andy Zigan (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) is second with 28 tackles (16 solo) and five pass breakups, with LB
Tom Fountaine (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) and FS
Jake Kern (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) just behind, with 25 and 24 tackles respectively.
Guillaume Paek (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent HS) and
Terry Gullette (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) have 3.5 sacks apiece this year.
Augsburg-Gustavus OT game last year was truly a classic!
Augsburg and Gustavus have locked horns in plenty of classic battles over the years, but none was more exciting than last year's 41-35, two-overtime thriller at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter. The 1997 win was the first ever for Augsburg in an overtime contest, and it put Augsburg into first place in the MIAC for the first time since 1973, en route to the Auggies' first MIAC championship since 1928.
Leading 21-10 at halftime, the Auggies gave up the lead on three touchdowns and a field goal, and trailed 32-24 with under three minutes to play. But Derrin Lamker found
Scott Hvistendahl on a sprint to the post, and the two hooked up on a 65-yard touchdown with 2:14 remaining to close the gap, and overtime was forced on the subsequent two-point conversion by Ted Schultz.
In overtime, Augsburg gave up a field goal, but kicker
Martin Hlinka came through with a career-best 47-yarder to keep the game alive.
Andrew Anthony caught a 13-yard score in the second overtime session, and Augsburg's defense held firm, clinching the victory by holding Gustavus at the 3-yard line on the final play.
Augsburg rated 19th in latest Football Gazette national poll
With its loss to St. John's Augsburg dropped from ninth to 19th in this week's NCAA Division III Top 40 national ranking, published by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
Lycoming (Pa, 3-0.), last year's national runner-up, remained the top-ranked team in this week's national poll, followed by the defending national champions, Mount Union (Ohio, 4-0).
Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-1) dropped from fifth to 17th with its loss at UW-Eau Claire last week, while St. John's moved from 19th to 17th. Other West Region teams in the national top 25 rankings: Central (Iowa, 4-0), fifth; Coe (Iowa, 4-0), eighth; Wartburg (Iowa, 5-0), 18th; and Willamette (Oregon, 3-1), 24th.
