Augsburg 28, Macalester 7

College Football Oct. 17 -- Augsburg 28, Macalester 7

MINNEAPOLIS Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) had eight catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns, leading Augsburg College to a 28-7 victory over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Anderson-Nelson Field.

Augsburg broke a two-game losing streak with its Homecoming game victory, and improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC. Macalester lost its fifth game in a row in falling to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the MIAC. Augsburg travels to St. Thomas next Saturday, while Macalester hosts Bethel.

Hvistendahl caught touchdown passes from Augsburg quarterback Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.), as the Auggies scored on four of their first five drives in the game. Tim Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) caught a four-yard pass from Tetzloff to complete the Augsburg scoring.

With his performance Saturday, Hvistendahl moved into fourth place in the all-time NCAA Division III receiving yardage record book, with 3,785 receiving yards on 225 career catches (11th all-time). Hvistendahl holds all of Augsburg's single-season and career receiving records, and now has 35 career receiving touchdowns - 10 this year. The Division III career record -- 4,311 yards, was set by Curt Barth of Eureka College last year. Only two receivers in Division III history have caught passes for 4,000 yards or more.

Tetzloff completed 20 of 42 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Hamer had eight receptions for 100 yards in the contest.

Kicker Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia/Farmington HS) became Augsburg's all-time top kicker in Saturday's game. With four extra-point kicks, he set the school career record for career kicking points (109) and extra-point kicks (58). He is currently tied with Dave Warnke (1980-82) for the school's most career field goal record with 17.

Macalester's lone touchdown came from Matt Diediker (Fr., Hinton, Iowa), who caught a 35-yard pass from Aaron Quitmeyer (So., Williston, N.D.) in the final minute of the first half. Neither team scored in the second half.

Quitmeyer completed 18 of 35 passes for 212 yards, but was intercepted three times in the contest. Jon Goodrich (Sr., Mays, Ind.) led the Scots with 109 yards on six receptions.

Joe Souba (So., Hayward, Wis.) paced the Auggie defense with eight tackles, while Rob Just (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), Guillaume Paek (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent HS) and Jake Kern (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had six tackles apiece. Kern had two interceptions in the contest.

Karl Wassman (Jr., Ormsby, Minn./St. James HS) led the Scots with 11 tackles, while Eddie Ray (Sr., Three Rivers, Texas) had 10 tackles and Clovis Ray (Sr., Three Rivers, Texas) had nine.

Pregame Media Notes:

The Augsburg College Auggies (3-2 overall, 2-2 MIAC) face Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Macalester College (1-4 overall, 0-4 MIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minn.
Stadium: Anderson-Nelson Field (cap., 2,000).
Coaches: Augsburg, Jack Osberg (8th season, 37-39); Macalester, Dennis Czech (1st season, 1-4).
Series: Macalester leads 29-28-2. Last year, Augsburg beat Macalester 24-7 at Macalester Stadium in St. Paul.
Broadcast: Augsburg broadcast on KKMS-AM 980 with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis.

Outlook: Augsburg looks to get back in the win column with the Homecoming game against Macalester, a team that is struggling under first-year coach Dennis Czech.
"Macalester always plays us tough," said Augsburg coach Jack Osberg. "In the matchups and the long rivalry, they always seem to play tough against us. They're a good, strong defensive team. They will come ready to play."

The Scots have allowed opponents 35.8 points per game, while scoring just 10.8 points per contest. The key for Augsburg to succeed against the Scots may come in the rushing game -- Macalester is allowing 219.4 rushing yards per contest while rushing for just 24.2 yards per game, numbers that help add up to a 419.6-89.8 total offense yardage-per-game deficit for the Scots.

Sophomore Aaron Quitmeyer has established himself as the Scots' starting quarterback, averaging 117 yards per game passing. His primary receivers are Jon Goodrich, Marty Graham and Ty O'Connell, though he has thrown the ball to 12 different receivers this season.

Czech is in his first season as the Scots' mentor. His offensive coordinator, Tom Cross, served as head coach at Concordia-St. Paul for 11 years.

Homecoming for Augsburg -- "Auggie Pride" -- is a key point in the season for the Auggies to turn the tide around, Osberg noted. "I think after two tough losses, a chance to come home for Homecoming is good for us," Osberg said. "It will be a good motivator for us. Our kids are ready to get back on the field and they're ready to play."

Gustavus sends Augsburg to second loss in a row, 21-7
ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Gustavus Adolphus College Golden Gusties improved to 5-0 on the season last Saturday with a 21-7 MIAC victory over the guest Augsburg College Auggies. The Gusties are undefeated this deep into the season for the first time since 1987. The loss was Augsburg's second in a row.

Senior quarterback Bob Southworth found senior wide receiver Chris Barnick on a 13-yard fade route with 7:11 remaining in the game to foil a second-half comeback attempt by Augsburg.

Augsburg's senior wide-out Scott Hvistendahl approached NCAA Division III records with his 14 catches for 198 yards and a score. He brought his career receptions total to 217 and his career receiving yards to 3,649, placing him at eighth place in the Division III record books. The all-time record for receiving yards in NCAA Division III is 4,311 yards by Curt Barth of Eureka (Ill.), who set the record a year ago.

The Gusties were led offensively by Southworth, who finished 23-of-31 passing for 289 yards with two touchdowns and only one interception. Gustie receivers were led by Chris Swansson, who finished with seven catches for 118 yards and one score on the day.

Hvistendahl's 14 catches and 198 yards led Augsburg pass receivers, and senior receiver Tim Hamer added 65 yards of his own on six receptions. Sophomore quarterback Paul Tetzloff was 21-of-34 for 266 yards on the day, including a 72-yard bomb to Hvistendahl for a touchdown. Gustavus picked Tetzloff off only once on the afternoon.

Solid play by both defenses kept scoring below what was expected. Auggie defenders were led by sophomore linebacker Joe Souba, who led all players with 10 tackles on the day. Sophomore Kurt Werk tallied nine tackles for Augsburg and also picked up a fumble recovery.

"Last week, we were a little flat to start with, and they jumped on us," said Augsburg coach Jack Osberg. "We came back and played a good second half. We had some gusto and enthusiasm, and that's a good sign."

The Hvistendahl Watch: Auggie WR now 8th in D-III receiving yards
Augsburg WR Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) returned to his usual pace, with a 14-catch, 198-yard receiving day at Gustavus on Saturday, keeping him on pace to make his mark on the NCAA Division III receiving record book.

Hvistendahl, who holds every Augsburg career and single-season receiving record, moved into ninth place in the NCAA Division III career receiving yardage list, with 3,649 yards on 217 receptions. The Division III record is 4,311 yards, set by Curt Barth of Eureka (Ill.) from 1994-97. Jeff Clay of Catholic (D.C.) also went over the 4,000-yard mark last year, with 4,101 career yards (1994-97). They are the only two Division III receivers to achieve the feat; in fact, only 11 receivers in the four NCAA divisions have surpassed the 4,000-yard barrier. Jerry Rice, who starred for Mississippi Valley State (Division I-AA) from 1981 to 1984 before becoming the NFL's top receiver, amassed 4,693 yards and 50 touchdowns on 301 receptions to hold the NCAA all-divisions career yardage record.

Hvistendahl, who is currently rated second in the Division III national statistics in receiving yards per game, is currently on pace (162.6 receiving yards per game) to top the 4,000-yard mark against Bethel at Augsburg on Nov. 7, and possibly break the Division III mark in the final game of the regular season, against Concordia-Moorhead on Nov. 13 at the Metrodome. Division III national records are for regular-season games only.

However, should Hvistendahl set the record, it may only last for a short time. Westminster (Mo.) junior Scott Pingel is already approaching the 4,000-yard mark in his third season, with 3,589 career receiving yards on 249 receptions. At his current nation-leading pace this season (213.5 yards per game), he could top the 4,400-yard mark at season's end. Pingel currently has 1,286 receiving yards on 79 catches through six games this year.

Augsburg kicker Martin Hlinka set to break records Saturday
Augsburg kicker Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia) has only missed once in 1998. Five-for-six on field goals, 15-for-15 on extra points. Hlinka could enter Augsburg record book as the top kicker in school history as early as Saturday against Macalester.

Hlinka is currently tied with Dave Warnke (1980-82) for the school record for career field goals, with 17, and is second to Warnke with 105 kicking points. Warnke had 106 kicking points in his career. Hlinka also has 54 career PATs, second to Warnke's 55. Hlinka set Augsburg single-season records for field goals (eight), PATs (31) and kicking points (55) last year.
|
Hlinka is currently 11th in the nation in field goals per game (1.00 average), and is second in scoring among kickers in the MIAC, behind Concordia-Moorhead's Clayton Horgen, who has 15 PATs and three field goals (24 points). Hlinka has nine PATs and four field goals (21 points) this season.

Hlinka also has been a starting forward on Augsburg's men's hockey team for the past three seasons. The Auggies claimed their first MIAC regular-season championship since 1983, along with their first-ever MIAC playoff title last season, and finished fourth in the nation in the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Grauer shifts from center to TE, Hamer moves back to WR spot
Look for a change in the offensive formation for Augsburg this week against Macalester. Auggie sophomore Doug Grauer makes his first collegiate start at tight end. Grauer was a starting offensive guard as a freshman last year, and moved to center for the first five games this season. Head coach Jack Osberg said that the move was primarily made for two reasons -- to provide solid blocking at the tight end position and to enable Tim Hamer to return to his original offensive position of wide receiver, after starting the season at tight end. Hamer has played WR for the last two weeks.

Hamer's move back to WR has shown some success for the Auggies, as Hamer has caught 14 of his 24 total passes for 151 of his 253 total receiving yards in the past two weeks. Hamer is currently fifth in the conference in receptions (11 per MIAC game) and ninth in receiving yardage (231 yards in conference games).

Augsburg to be featured on regional cable TV twice this year
Augsburg will be featured twice this season on MediaOne, a Twin Cities regional cable television company. Augsburg's game at St. Thomas on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Augsburg's Nov. 13 Metrodome game against Concordia-Moorhead will be carried live on MediaOne cable in St. Paul and the northern and eastern suburbs.

Due to lack of contractural arrangements between MediaOne and Paragon Cable in Minneapolis, cable TV viewers will not be able to see the games on the Augsburg campus or in the city of Minneapolis. However, MediaOne cable viewers can see the two Auggie games on the following cable channels: Channel 25 in St. Paul, Channel 14 in the Burnsville, Eagan and north-central suburbs, Channel 16 in the northwest suburbs and Channel 63 in the St. Croix Valley.

Augsburg's game next Saturday at St. Thomas will also be the MIAC Game of the Week on KFAN-AM 1130. The game will also be heard live via RealAudio throughout the world via the Internet. Check out www.kfan.com on the web for details. It's the only time this year the Auggies will be on KFAN; however, fans can hear all Augsburg football games on KKMS-AM 980, along with 25 winter sporting events coming up this school year.

Augsburg set history with victory over Macalester last season
Augsburg and Macalester locked horns in sloppy conditions on Nov. 1, 1997 in St. Paul, and for a short time, it appeared that Macalester was going to score a major upset over the Auggies, taking an early 7-0 lead. However, the Auggies rallied and scored a 24-7 win, clinching a share of the MIAC title for the first time since 1928.

Derrin Lamker hooked up with Tim Hamer on a 40-yard scoring strike to tie the game in the first quarter, followed up by a two-yard pass from Lamker to Scott Hvistendahl. Thane Drier scored on a one-yard run, and Martin Hlinka added a field goal for Augsburg.

Hvistendahl caught 10 passes for 163 yards in the game, and Augsburg outgained Macalester by a 377-318 margin, despite giving up 34 minutes of time of possesion and four fumble
