College Football Oct. 24 -- St. Thomas 29, Augsburg 28 (2 OT)
Story courtesy of St. Thomas Sports Information
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- University of St. Thomas senior tight end Chris Chappuis (Fairbault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) caught an 18-yard pass and the subsequent two-point conversion in the second overtime as the Tommies (4-3 overall, 4-2 MIAC) overcame a 28-21 overtime deficit and rally past the Augsburg College Auggies (4-3, 3-3) at UST's O'Shaughnessy Stadium on Saturday.
In running their win streak to three, the Toms overcame a school-record 15-catch, 252-yard receiving perfromance by Augsburg All-American
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS). The Auggie senior became the third player in NCAA Division III history to surpass 4,000 receiving yards. Hvistendahl now has 4,037 yards (No. 3 all-time) and 241 catches (sixth all-time) with three games to play in his career.
The Toms, who didn't have a turnover and intercepted four Auggie passes, tied an NCAA record on a 99-yard TD pass from Greg Kaiser (Jr., Mora, Minn.) to Mark Warder (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) in the second period that built a 21-3 lead. The Toms also scored on the first play from scrimmage as Brad Grossman (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) dashed 80 yards for a score.
St. Thomas now has won 26 of the last 28 meetings with Augsburg, including the last 14 games at home. The Auggies, trying to win in St. Paul for the first time since 1970, rallied from a 21-3 second-period defict and forced overtime with a score and two-point conversion early in the fourth period. The Auggies stopped the Toms on downs in the first overtime but missed a chance to win as
Martin Hlinka's (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia/Farmington HS) 39-yard field goal went wide left. The Auggies came back and scored a 13-yard TD pass from
Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.) to
Tim Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), and Hlinka's kick made it 28-21.
The Toms came back with the ball at the Auggie 25 and completed two passes, with Chappuis breaking two tackles after his catch to reach the end zone. Instead of going for a kick to try to tie, the Toms went for two and Kaiser hooked up again with Chappuis for the winning two-point score.
Kaiser, celebrating his 21st birthday, completed 26 of 42 for 327 yards and three TD with no interceptions. Warder had a career-best 10 catches for 196 yards and Grossman, subbing for the injured Ben Duffey (Sr., Richfield, Minn.), ran 13 times for 103 yards. Steve Nolander (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) intercepted two passes, Blaine Tetreault (Jr., Fridley, Minn.) picked off one in the end zone and Tim Balthazor (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had a pickoff at the UST 25 with 4:59 to play in the fourth period.
Augsburg outgained the Toms in total offense 488-452 with 290 second-half yards.
Thane Drier (Sr., Durand, Wis.) rushed 16 times for 99 yards, 100 yards in regulation. Tetzloff rushed for two short TDs and completed 25-of-44 passes for 339 yards and one TD. Hlinka kicked field goals of 25 and 27 yards and became the schools all-time leader in career field goals.
Jake Kern (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggies with 10 tackles (six solo) and a pass break-up, while
Andy Zigan (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had eight tackles (five solo) and
Joe Souba (So., Hayward, Wis.) had seven (four solo).

Pregame Media Notes:
The Augsburg College Auggies (4-2 overall, 3-2 MIAC) face Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival the University of St. Thomas Tommies (3-3 overall, 3-2 MIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
Stadium: O'Shaughnessy Stadium (cap. 5,000).
Coaches: Augsburg,
Jack Osberg (8th season, 38-39); St. Thomas, Don Roney (1st season, 3-3).
Series: St. Thomas leads 44-8-2. Last year, St. Thomas topped Augsburg 28-12 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium, the Auggies' only MIAC loss of last season.
Broadcast: Augsburg broadcast on KKMS-AM 980 with Tom Witschen on play-by-play and Russ Bohaty on analysis. KFAN-AM 1130 MIAC Game of the Week with Anthony LaPanta. Also televised on MediaOne cable (Channel 25 in St. Paul, Channel 14 in the Burnsville, Eagan and north-central suburbs, Channel 16 in the northwest suburbs and Channel 63 in the St. Croix Valley), carrying KFAN audio feed. KFAN feed also available on the Internet for people using RealAudio software. KFAN's web site is www.kfan.com.
Outlook: Augsburg will try to avenge its only MIAC loss of last season, though Auggie head coach
Jack Osberg says that the players aren't looking at the game as a revenge factor.
"It's just St. Thomas, which is a big rivalry for us," Osberg said. "Our kids will be up for it. They probably won't be thinking about last year's game. We just have to keep playing our game right now and improve our offense."
St. Thomas and Augsburg have both been middle-of-the-road teams in the MIAC this season, as their 3-2 MIAC records attest; St. Thomas is fourth in the MIAC in total offense (354.8 yards per game) while Augsburg is fifth (339.6), while on defense, St. Thomas is second (287.2 yards per game allowed) in the MIAC with Augsburg sixth (302.6).
"St. Thomas will play an agressive defense against us. We have to play hard against their defensive front," Osberg said. "We'll have to make our stand over there on defense. It's a huge game for us. They've got a good passing game."
Saturday's game will be a matchup of two of the better young quarterbacks in the MIAC -- St. Thomas' Greg Kaiser and Augsburg's
Paul Tetzloff. Kaiser is third in the MIAC in passing (216 yards per game in MIAC games) with Tetzloff fourth (201). Receivers
Scott Hvistendahl of Augsburg (135.60 yards per game in MIAC play) and Mike Westland of St. Thomas (77.4 ypg) will also be featured on Saturday.
Auggies break two-game losing skid with Homecoming victory
MINNEAPOLIS
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) had eight catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns, leading Augsburg to a 28-7 victory over Macalester in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday at Anderson-Nelson Field. Augsburg broke a two-game losing streak with its Homecoming game victory.
Hvistendahl caught touchdown passes from Augsburg quarterback
Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.), as the Auggies scored on four of their first five drives in the game.
Tim Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) caught a four-yard pass from Tetzloff to complete the Augsburg scoring. Tetzloff completed 20 of 42 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Hamer had eight receptions for 100 yards in the contest.
Kicker
Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia/Farmington HS) became Augsburg's all-time top kicker in Saturday's game. With four extra-point kicks, he set the school career record for career kicking points (109) and extra-point kicks (58). He is currently tied with Dave Warnke (1980-82) for the school's most career field goal record with 17.
Macalester's lone touchdown came from Matt Diediker (Fr., Hinton, Iowa), who caught a 35-yard pass from Aaron Quitmeyer (So., Williston, N.D.) in the final minute of the first half. Neither team scored in the second half. Quitmeyer completed 18 of 35 passes for 212 yards, but was intercepted three times in the contest.
Joe Souba (So., Hayward, Wis.) paced the Auggie defense with eight tackles, while
Rob Just (Jr., New Ulm, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS),
Guillaume Paek (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent HS) and
Jake Kern (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had six tackles apiece. Kern had two interceptions in the contest.
"We played a very good first half, but we missed a few scoring opportunities in the second half," said Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg.
The Hvistendahl Watch: Auggie WR now 4th in D-III receiving yards
Augsburg WR
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) had an eight-catch, 136-yard receiving day against Macalester on Saturday, keeping him on pace to make his mark on the NCAA Division III receiving record book.
Hvistendahl, who holds every Augsburg career and single-season receiving record, moved into fourth place in the NCAA Division III career receiving yardage list, with 3,785 yards on 226 receptions with 35 receiving touchdowns after six games this year. The Division III record is 4,311 yards, set by Kurt Barth of Eureka (Ill.) from 1994-97. Jeff Clay of Catholic (D.C.) also went over the 4,000-yard mark last year, with 4,101 career yards (1994-97). They are the only two Division III receivers to achieve the feat; in fact, only 11 receivers in the four NCAA divisions have surpassed the 4,000-yard barrier. Jerry Rice, who starred for Mississippi Valley State (Division I-AA) from 1981 to 1984 before becoming the NFL's top receiver, amassed 4,693 yards and 50 touchdowns on 301 receptions to hold the NCAA all-divisions career yardage record.
Hvistendahl, who is currently second in the Division III national statistics in receiving yards per game, is currently on pace (158.2 receiving yards per game) to top the 4,000-yard mark against Carleton next Saturday, and possibly break the Division III mark (projected to 4,418 career yards) in the final game of the regular season, against Concordia-Moorhead on Nov. 13 at the Metrodome.
Westminster (Mo.) junior Scott Pingel is also approaching the 4,000-yard mark in his third season, with 3,779 career receiving yards on 259 receptions, just six yards behind Hvistendahl, though Augsburg has four games remaining the season, compared to Westminster's three games left. At his current nation-leading pace this season (210.9 yards per game), Pingel could top the 4,400-yard mark at season's end. Pingel currently has 1,476 receiving yards on 89 catches through seven games this year.
With his performance against Macalester, Hvistendahl also established himself as the top receiver in MIAC history. Hvistendahl passed Carleton's Jim Bradford's records of 3,357 career receiving yards on 192 receptions in MIAC games, as well as Bradford's career overall mark of 3,719 yards. Hvistendahl now has 3,383 receiving yards in MIAC games on 206 receptions. He has 45 receptions for 678 yards in MIAC games this season.
Augsburg kicker
Martin Hlinka has one more record to break
Augsburg kicker
Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia) has now established himself as the school's all-time record kicker, with only one career record yet to hold on his own after a four-for-four extra-point performance against Macalester last Saturday.
Hlinka passed Dave Warnke (1980-82) for the school record for career kicking points, and now has 109 kicking points compared to Warnke's 106. He also passed Warnke's record for PATs, with 58 currently compared to Warnke's 55. The two remain tied for the school record for career field goals, with 17.
Hlinka set Augsburg single-season records for field goals (eight), PATs (31) and kicking points (55) last year.
Hlinka is currently 15th in the nation in field goals per game (0.83 average), and is tops in scoring among kickers in the MIAC with 25 points in conference games (13 extra points and four field goals). St. Thomas' Mike Westland, who is also a fullback for the Tommies in addition to handling the team's kicking duties, has three touchdowns, four extra-points and two field goals for 28 MIAC points.
Hlinka is a perfect 19-for-19 on extra points and 5-for-6 on field goals for 34 overall kicking points this season.
Hlinka also has been a starting forward on Augsburg's men's hockey team for the past three seasons. The Auggies claimed their first MIAC regular-season championship since 1983, along with their first-ever MIAC playoff title last season, and finished fourth in the nation in the NCAA Division III national tournament.
Auggies look to break long losing streak at St. Thomas on Saturday
Another long road losing streak is on the line for Augsburg's football team when it faces St. Thomas at O'Shaughnessy Stadium on Saturday. The Auggies, whose only MIAC loss last year was at St. Thomas (28-12), have won just twice over the Tommies (1992 and 1995) since 1971, and both were at Augsburg's home stadium, Anderson-Nelson Field.
Augsburg last beat the Tommies at St. Thomas in 1970, when the Auggies edged the Tommies 28-21. St. Thomas leads the all-time series 44-8-2, and has won 13 games in a row over the Auggies at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Augsburg featured throughout the Twin Cities in football twice
Augsburg will be featured twice this season on MediaOne, a Twin Cities regional cable television company. Augsburg's game at St. Thomas on Saturday, and Augsburg's Nov. 13 Metrodome game against Concordia-Moorhead will be carried live on MediaOne cable in St. Paul and the northern and eastern suburbs.
Due to lack of contractural arrangements for MediaOne in Minneapolis, cable TV viewers will not be able to see the games on the Augsburg campus or in the city of Minneapolis. However, MediaOne cable viewers can see the two Auggie games on the following cable channels: Channel 25 in St. Paul, Channel 14 in the Burnsville, Eagan and north-central suburbs, Channel 16 in the northwest suburbs and Channel 63 in the St. Croix Valley.
Saturday's game at St. Thomas will also be the MIAC Game of the Week on KFAN-AM 1130. KFAN's broadcast will also be heard live via RealAudio throughout the world via the Internet. Check out www.kfan.com on the web for details. It's the only time this year the Auggies will be on KFAN; however, fans can hear all Augsburg football games on KKMS-AM 980, along with 25 winter sporting events coming up this school year.
