Women's Basketball -- Bethel 60, Augsburg 42
MINNEAPOLIS (12/12) -- Two players had double-doubles for Bethel College on Saturday, as the Royals took advantage of a poor shooting afternoon by Augsburg College to down the Auggies 60-42 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Forwards Lisa Carlson (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) and Sarah Anderson (Sr., Shakopee, Minn.) dominated the inside for the Royals. Carlson had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Anderson had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Carlson went 11-of-14 at the free-throw line.
Shannon Nuest (Sr., Hancock, Minn.) added 11 points for the Royals, now 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. Bethel jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first 10 minutes of play and maintained a dominant lead throughout the game.
Augsburg was paced by three scorers in double figures --
Kelly Manly (Fr., Fridley, Minn.) with 12 points,
Colleen Shellum (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) with 10 points and
Jill Ruprecht (Sr., Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) with 10 points.
Augsburg shot just 16.7 percent from the field in the first half (4 of 24), and ended up making just 15 field goals in 59 attempts (25.4 percent). The Auggies also committed 23 turnovers. Meanwhile, Bethel had just 17 turnovers and hit 34.4 percent (21 of 61) of their field-goal attempts.
Augsburg, now 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC, competes in the Embry-Riddle (Florida) Tournament Dec. 29-30. Bethel has the holiday break off, and returns to action Jan. 2 at Carleton.
