NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Running back
Thane Drier (Sr., Durand, Wis.) scampered 62 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, giving Augsburg College a 31-24 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday at St. Olaf's Manitou Field.
The victory Saturday was the first for Augsburg at St. Olaf since 1928, and Augsburg's first in Northfield (against either Carleton or St. Olaf) since 1978. St. Olaf leads the all-time series against Augsburg 31-10, with the other eight Auggie victories in the series coming at either Augsburg home fields or the Metrodome. The win also brings Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg to 37-37 on his career.
Drier's 62-yard run with 8:02 remaining, the longest of the season by an Augsburg running back, came on the first play from scrimmage after St. Olaf tied the game at 24-24 on a two-yard run for a touchdown by Jay Larsen (So., Northfield, Minn.). Drier rushed 12 times for 117 yards.
Augsburg, defending MIAC champions, is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while St. Olaf falls to 0-3 and 0-2 respectively. Augsburg hosts also-unbeaten St. John's next Saturday night, while St. Olaf plays at Bethel.
Linebacker
Andy Howard (So., Waseca, Minn.) scored Augsburg's first defensive touchdown of the season, picking off a pass by St. Olaf's Peter Schultz (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) and running 31 yards for the score.
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) and
Tim Hamer ,(Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) also had touchdowns, both coming on receptions from freshman quarterback
Joe Thorvig (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn./Totino-Grace HS).
Thorvig, filling in for injured regular
Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.), completed 11 of 33 passes for 170 yards, but was intercepted twice and fumbled the ball away once.
Hvistendahl caught seven passes for 115 yards, marking the 10th straight game in which he has caught 100 yards or more, dating back to Augsburg's win over Carleton on Oct. 11, 1997. The mark includes two NCAA playoff games.
Hvistendahl now has 3,383 career receiving yards on 197 receptions, moving him into 11th place on the NCAA Division III all-time career receiving yardage record list. The Division III career record, 4,311 yards, was set by Curt Barth of Eureka (Ill.) last year. Hvistendahl, who holds every Augsburg career and single-season receiving record, caught his 31st career touchdown pass on Saturday.
Larsen scored twice for the Oles en route to a team-high 60 yards on 15 ,carries. Brian Sprout (Fr., Lake City, Minn.) also caught a touchdown pass for the Oles, a 45-yarder from quarterback Schultz.
Schultz was sacked seven times in the contest, 2.5 each coming from Auggies
Guillaume Paek (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent HS) and
Jason Van Houten (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS). Howard, who returned an interception for a ,score, also led the Auggies with 11 tackles (six solo) and one pass break-up.
Tom Fountaine (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had eight tackles, including six solo.
St. Olaf was paced on defense by Aaron Crowser (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.), who had eight tackles (seven solo), an interception and a pass break-up. ,Ben Dieterich (Jr., St. Angsar, Iowa) had five tackles (four solo).

Pregame Media Notes:
The Augsburg College Auggies (2-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) open the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season against St. Olaf (0-2 overall, 0-1 MIAC) on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
Stadium: Manitou Field (cap. 5,000).
Coaches: Augsburg,
Jack Osberg (8th season, 36-37); St. Olaf: Paul Miller (2nd season, 2-10).
Series: St. Olaf leads 31-9. Last year, Augsburg beat St. Olaf 42-0 at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Broadcast: KKMS-AM 980 with Tom Witschen on play-by-play Russ Bohaty on analysis. St. Olaf broadcast on KDHL-AM 920 (Faribault, Minn.) with Mike Morrisey and Gordy Kosfeld.
This week's matchup: It might be easy for Augsburg to look past this Saturday's game against 0-2 St. Olaf to an early-season conference showdown next week against St. John's. But don't tell that to coach
Jack Osberg.
"We've talked about that (looking past teams), and we won't be looking ahead. The kids are focused on this week," Osberg said. "We're pretty focused on St. Olaf."
St. Olaf played St. Thomas tough last week, falling 9-6 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul. Despite only producing 94 yards of total offense against the Tommies and giving up 351 yards on defense, the Oles had a chance to win the game late, when a drive put the ball on the UST 29-yard line. But with 47 seconds remaining, St. Olaf kicker Haakon Nelson missed a 46-yard field-goal attempt that would have tied the game. Cornerback Steve Fried returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown to produce St. Olaf's only score in the contest.
"They're a lot better on defense than they were last year," said Osberg. "It's our first game on grass this year, so it's an adjustment for us. But we don't talk about that too much. We just go down and play."
St. Olaf lost its season-opener 23-0 to Carthage College (Wis.) in a nonconference game. Augsburg beat St. Olaf 42-0 last season at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Freshman QB Thorvig leads Auggies on game-winning drive
MINNEAPOLIS Freshman quarterback
Joe Thorvig, filling in for injured starter
Paul Tetzloff, drove Augsburg on a six-play, 64-yard drive late in the game to lead the Auggies to a 24-14 victory over Hamline in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Anderson-Nelson Field.
Thorvig's drive - three runs and three passes - culminated in a 32-yard touchdown pass to
Scott Hvistendahl, which broke a 14-14 tie with 4:51 remaining. Augsburg's
Martin Hlinka put the finishing touches on the game with a 23-yard field goal with 3:41 remaining.
Augsburg has now won nine straight regular-season games in MIAC play, 10 straight over MIAC opponents (including an NCAA Division III playoff win over Concordia-Moorhead last year). It is also Augsburg's seventh straight home victory, dating back to 1996.
Thorvig, who came into the game with 5:30 remaining in the first half after Tetzloff suffered a hyperextended elbow injury, completed 12 of 17 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Tetzloff had completed 7 of 18 throws for 84 yards and a touchdown. Hvistendahl caught nine passes for 161 yards on Saturday.
Saturday's game was a defensive struggle in the first half, as Augsburg could only muster one score, a five-yard pass from Tetzloff to
Tim Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.). Augsburg's defense blocked two field-goal attempts by Hamline kickers, one by
Guillaume Paek (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent HS) and the other by
Todd Hamer (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.). Linebacker
Andy Howard (So., Waseca, Minn.) paced the Auggies with 11 tackles (four solo), while
Andy Zigan (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Tom Fountaine (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had nine tackles each. Fountaine also had a sack.
After Thorvig completed his first touchdown pass of the game, a 15-yard pass to
Tim Hamer, Hamline rallied to tie the game at 14-14 midway through the fourth period, setting the stage for the Auggies' game-winning drive.
In the MIAC
In conference-season-opening action in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last Saturday, Augsburg claimed a 24-14 home win over Hamline, St. Thomas edged St. Olaf 9-6, Gustavus stopped Carleton 40-14, Bethel topped Concordia-Moorhead 34-20 and St. John's blanked Macalester 55-0.
This Saturday in the MIAC (all at 1 p.m.), Augsburg plays at St. Olaf, St. John's hosts St. Thomas, Bethel plays at Hamline, Carleton travels to Concordia-Moorhead and Gustavus hosts Macalester.
Augsburg faces several milestones on Saturday against St. Olaf
Augsburg's football team, and head coach
Jack Osberg, have a chance to achieve several milestones on Saturday against St. Olaf.
-- Should Augsburg beat the Oles in Northfield, it will be Augsburg's first victory at the Oles' home field since Sept. 29, 1928, when Augsburg's first (and only before 1997) MIAC championship squad shut out the Oles 13-0. St. Olaf leads the series by a 31-9 margin. Six of Augsburg's victories in the series came at Augsburg's home fields -- Nicollet Park in 1950 (Augsburg 18-7); Parade Stadium in 1974 (Augsburg 16-0), 1981 (Augsburg 38-16) and 1982 (Augsburg 24-17); and Anderson-Nelson Field in 1993 (Augsburg 26-24) and 1997 (Augsburg 42-0). Two victories, in 1994 (Augsburg 34-20) and 1995 (Augsburg 20-12), came at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
-- An Augsburg victory would also be Augsburg's first overall victory in Northfield, Minn., against either Carleton or St. Olaf, since 1978. On Sept. 23, 1978, Augsburg topped Carleton 28-7 at Carleton's Laird Stadium, in the first-ever contest between the two schools. Carleton leads the series 12-5, with the Auggies' other wins coming on Augsburg home fields at Parade Stadium (1979, Augsburg 34-6; and 1983, Augsburg 31-21) and Anderson-Nelson Field (1995, Augsburg 20-7; and 1997, Augsburg 35-21).
-- An Augsburg victory would also bring Osberg to the .500 mark on his career, making him only the second coach in school history to reach that mark -- Bill Caris, who coached Augsburg from 1972-75, compiled a 19-19 record during his tenure. Osberg, in his eighth season, is 36-37 entering Saturday's game. Osberg's 36 wins is the second-most among Auggie football coaches; Edor Nelson, who coached from 1947-69, compiled a 56-118-10 record (.304).
The Hvistendahl Watch: Auggie WR now 12th in D-III receiving yards
Augsburg WR
Scott Hvistendahl (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolph HS) continued his assault on the NCAA Division III receiving record books last Saturday with a nine-catch, 161-yard, one touchdown performance against Hamline. Hvistendahl, who now holds every Augsburg career and single-season receiving record, caught his 30th career touchdown pass with 4:51 remaining against Hamline, putting the Auggies ahead to stay en route to a 24-14 victory.
The 161-yard effort, which included catches of 32 (TD) and 46 yards, was Hvistendahl's ninth 100-yard-plus receiving yardage effort in a row, dating back to Augsburg's game against Carleton on Oct. 11, 1997. The mark includes two NCAA playoff games.
Hvistendahl moved into 12th place in the NCAA Division III receiving yardage record book, with 3,268 yards on 190 receptions. The Division III record is 4,311 yards, set by Curt Barth of Eureka (Ill.) from 1994-97. Jeff Clay of Catholic (D.C.) also went over the 4,000-yard mark last year, with 4,101 career yards (1994-97). They are the only two Division III receivers to achieve the feat; in fact, only 11 receivers in the four NCAA divisions have surpassed the 4,000-yard barrier. Jerry Rice, who starred for Mississippi Valley State (Division I-AA) from 1981 to 1984 before becoming the NFL's top receiver, amassed 4,693 yards and 50 touchdowns on 301 receptions to hold the NCAA all-divisions career yardage record.
Hvistendahl is currently on pace (216.0 receiving yards per game) to top the 4,000-yard mark in Augsburg's sixth game of the year, against Macalester on Oct. 17, and could bust the Division III record the following week, Oct. 24, at St. Thomas. If he maintains the 216.0 yardage-per-game pace, which is probably unlikely, he would end his career with 4,996 receiving yards, topping Rice's mark possibly against Bethel at home on Nov. 7.
Thorvig makes impact at QB,will face first collegiate start
Augsburg freshman
Joe Thorvig (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) was effective in his first collegiate appearance last week against Hamline, completing 12 of 17 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter.
Thorvig filled in for starter
Paul Tetzloff (So., Faribault, Minn.), who was knocked out of the game in the second quarter with a hyperextended elbow injury on his throwing arm. Tetzloff will miss Saturday's contest at St. Olaf.
But Auggie head coach
Jack Osberg has confidence with Thorvig, who gained confidence as the game went along and led the Auggies on their game-winning drive, a six-play, 64-yard scoring march. "The kid's bright. He scored a 30 on his ACT," Osberg said of Thorvig, who was an Academic All-State recipient in football and baseball at Totino-Grace. "He got better as the game went on."
Augsburg rated 11th in latest Football Gazette national poll
For the second week in a row, Augsburg maintained its highest national ranking ever, 11th, in this week's NCAA Division III Top 40 national ranking, published by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
Lycoming (Pa, 2-0.), last year's national runner-up, remained the top-ranked team in this week's national poll, followed by the defending national champions, Mount Union (Ohio, 2-0). The biggest drop was again suffered by Simpson (Iowa), the team which derailed Augsburg 61-21 in last year's national playoff quarterfinals. Starting the season as the top-ranked team in the national polls, two consecutive losses have dropped the 1-2 Storm to 38th in this week's Football Gazette Top 40 poll.
Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) is the top Division III West Region team in the national rankings, at sixth. Other West Region teams: Central (Iowa, 3-0), 10th; Coe (Iowa, 3-0), 12th; St. John's (Minn., 2-0), 24th; Lakeland (Wis., 2-0), 31st; Wartburg (Iowa, 2-1), 28th; Wisconsin-La Crosse (0-2), 39th.
