MINNEAPOLIS -- Andy Tripp (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored his second goal of the game at the 53-second mark of the second period Friday night, giving the Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team a lead it would not relinquish, en route to a 4-3 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Gustavus improved to 7-6-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the MIAC, while Augsburg dropped its first MIAC contest of the season, falling to 6-5-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg, which won the MIAC Thanksgiving Tournament in November, suffered its first loss in seven games (6-1-1) against MIAC opponents in conference and nonconference games this season; Gustavus picked up its fourth win in five games (4-0-1) against Augsburg in conference contests over the past three seasons; 5-2-1 including Thanksgiving Tournament games.
After Augsburg jumped out in front at the four-minute mark of the first period on a goal from Steve LaMere (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.), the visiting Gusties erupted for three straight goals over a seven-minute span. Tripp put the Gusties on the board at the 10:55 mark, followed by Mike Hoolihan's (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) team-leading sixth goal of the year and Travis Trembath's (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) first collegiate goal.
Mario LeBlanc (Sr., Mackenzie, B.C./Prince George HS) had two goals for the Auggies, giving him five goals on the season, second to LaMere's eight for the Auggie scoring lead. Shane Spears (So., St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had two assists on the evening.
Peet Moseley (Jr., Orono, Minn.) stopped 30 Auggie shots, including all 11 in the third period, to pick up the victory in the nets for the Gusties. Ryan McIntosh (So., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) had 22 saves in a losing effort. Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 33-26 margin. The two teams combined for 32 minutes of penalties (Augsburg 7-for-14, Gustavus 9-for-18), and each connected on a power-play goal in the contest.
The series concludes with a game Saturday night (1/16) at 7:05 p.m. at Gustavus' Lund Ice Center in St. Peter, Minn.
