NORTHFIELD, Minn., (1/16/99) --
Devean George (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) scored a MIAC single-game record of 52 points to lead Augsburg in a 105-97 overtime win over Carleton in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action Saturday at Carleton's West Gym.
George broke the MIAC single-game scoring record of 49 points, set by Bill Sexton of Saint John's University against Macalester College, on March 3, 1954. He also broke the Augsburg single-game scoring record of 48 points, set Dec. 27, 1963 against Lincoln University by Dan Anderson, and later tied by George with a 48-point effort in a four-overtime win over St. Cloud State on Nov. 24, 1998. The NCAA Division III single-game scoring record, 77 points, was set by Jeff Clement of Grinnell last season. There are 20 games in which a Division III player has scored 55 or more points in a single game, according to the NCAA.
George, a consensus preseason All-America and MIAC Most Valuable Player in 1997-98, crept closer to the 2,000-point plateau with the record-setting performance Saturday. Playing in his 81st career game, George now has 1,867 career points and 691 career rebounds, putting him in third place in the school's all-time scoring category and in second in rebounding. Augsburg head coach Brian Ammann, who played for the Auggies from 1981-85, has the school's scoring record of 2,271 points in 106 games. Anderson is second with 2,052 points in 105 games, and holds the rebounding record with 1,211.
The 52-point performance marked the fourth time in his career that George has scored 40 or more points in a single game, the 50th time he has scored 20 points or more and the 77th time he has scored in double figures in his 81-game career -- the 69th time in his last 70 career games.
The Auggies (11-2 overall, 8-1 MIAC ) shot 61% for the game and controlled the boards, outrebounding Carleton (7-6 overall, 4-5 MIAC) 37-26, to keep control of first place in the MIAC. George was an outstanding 18 of 23 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and added nine boards to lead the Auggies to victory.
Augsburg led the game by as much as 15 points in the first half before Carleton whittled the lead back down to six points, trailing 43-37 at the half. Carleton hit three consecutive three-pointers coming out of the half, including one by Paul Novotny (Sr., Champlin Park, Minn.) who led the Knights with 24 points. The Knights led by seven, 89-82 with 2:25 left in the second period, before Augsburg went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 89-89 at the end of regulation.
The Auggies controlled the overtime period, led by
Jeoffrey Reed (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS), who scored 10 of his 16 points in the extra period. The Auggies outscored Carleton 16-8 in overtime.
Other high scorers in the game included Carleton's Josh Wilhelm (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) who had 23 points and nine rebounds in 23 minutes, and Augsburg's
Kris Long (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS), who had 21 points and 10 rebounds.
