Men's Basketball -- Augsburg 57, Gustavus 56
Minneapolis Star-Tribune: "Auggies edge Gustavus in MIAC showdown"
St. Paul Pioneer Press: "Auggies hold on, tip Gusties by one point"
ST. PETER, Minn., (1/27/99) --
Devean George (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) moved closer to the 2,000-point plateau with a 17-point, 15-rebound effort Wednesday night (1/27/99), leading Augsburg College to a 57-56 men's basketball victory over Gustavus Adolphus College, in a battle of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leaders before 2,942 fans at Gustavus' Gus Young Court in Lund Center.
The victory was just Augsburg's third in the last 24 meetings between the two schools (covering Augsburg head coach Brian Ammann's 11-year career), and the first for Augsburg at the Lund Center in Amman's tenure. The win avenges an earlier 80-69 victory by Gustavus at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall on Dec. 9.
George, a consensus preseason All-America and MIAC Most Valuable Player in 1997-98, now has 1,949 career points and 725 career rebounds, keeping him in third place in the school's all-time scoring category and in fourth in rebounding. Ammann, who played for the Auggies from 1981-85, has the school's scoring record of 2,271 points in 106 games. Anderson is second with 2,052 points in 105 games, and holds the rebounding record with 1,211. The 17-point performance marked the 80th time George has scored in double figures in his 84-game career -- the 72nd time in his last 73 career games. The double-double was George's 26th of his career (10th this season).
The Auggies improve to 14-2 overall and 11-1 in the MIAC, giving the Auggies a two-game lead over second-place Gustavus, which is now 10-5 overall and 8-3 in the MIAC. Augsburg is rated fifth in the most recent NCAA Division III West Region rankings. Gustavus was an honorable-mention recipient in the region rankings, after being ranked fifth in the region the week before.
The 57-point effort was the lowest scoring output for Augsburg this season, and the lowest scoring effort by an Augsburg men's basketball team since a 55-48 loss against Gustavus on Jan. 4, 1997 at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg entered the game averaging 90.8 points per game, fifth-best in the nation in Division III basketball.
Augsburg led 25-21 at halftime and held on after 20 lead changes and nine ties in the back-and-forth game. Gustavus outscored the Auggies 35-32 in the second stanza. In the final minute of play,
Kris Long (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) scored a basket and was fouled to give Augsburg its 57-56 lead. Long missed the free throw for a possible three-point play, but Gustavus was unable to score in its final two possessions, and the Auggies escaped with the road victory.
Long had 15 points and five rebounds for the Auggies.
Kevin Van Rossum (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had eight points, and
Jeoffrey Reed (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) had seven points, three assists and four steals.
Kyle Crubel (Jr., Bloomington, Wis.) had seven points.
Gustavus was paced by Luke Schmidt (Sr., New Ulm, Minn.), who had 17 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Joel Stoltenow (Sr., Waterville, Minn./W-E-M HS) and Brent Olson (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) had seven points apiece, while Bob Southworth (Sr., Gibbon, Minn./G-F-W HS), Mark McDonnell (Sr., Minnesota Lake, Minn./Maple River HS) and Marc Newell (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) were limited to six points each.
Augsburg hosts Bethel on Saturday (1/30) at 3 p.m., while Gustavus travels to Hamline.
