Game Summary:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/12/99) -- Brian Waldo (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) scored on a 30-foot slap shot with one second left in the third period to force overtime, capping a five-goal third-period rally to give the host University of St. Thomas a 6-6 overtime tie with Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game at the State Fair Coliseum.
The win drops Augsburg to 2-0-1 overall and in the MIAC. It was the season-opening game for St. Thomas.
Augsburg led 4-1 at the end of two periods, behind two first-period goals from
Brad Schwartzbauer (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and goals from
Andy Ness (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and
Mike Jackson (Jr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS), before the Tommies mounted their comeback.
Steve Aronson (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) led the Tommie charge, scoring the lone UST goal in the second period and adding two goals and an assist in the third period. Tom Skrypek (Jr., Shoreview, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had the other Tommie goal, and the other Auggie goals were notched by
Tony Putt (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Jaroslav Cesky (Fr., Praha, Czech Republic).
Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) faced plenty of activity in the nets for the Auggies, as he made 44 saves, including 19 in the third period. Tavis Gillard (Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) made 24 saves for St. Thomas.
