Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (11/19/99) -- Scott Wagner (Sr., Calgary, Alberta) scored at the 3:54 mark of the third period, breaking a 3-3 tie and propelling the University of Wisconsin-Superior to a 4-3 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game Friday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Wisconsin-Superior improves to 6-1-0 overall, while Augsburg drops to 2-2-1 overall. The game was the first "interlocking" game of the season for Augsburg, of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and Wisconsin-Superior, of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
Despite playing without four first-line players due to suspensions from fighting disqualifications in their last game, the Auggies were able to stay competitive with Superior, the defending NCAA Division III national runner-up, and even take a 3-2 lead midway through the third period.
But Chris Hackett (Fr., Paradise, Newfoundland) tied the game at 3-3 at the 15:49 mark of the second frame, followed early in the third by Wagner's eventual game-winner.
Superior outshot the Auggies by a 51-25 margin in the game, pounding 21 shots on Auggie goalie
Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) in the second period. McIntosh ended up with 47 saves. His counterpart in the nets for the Yellowjackets, Tom Pink (Sr., Superior, Wis.), made 22 saves.
Augsburg was only able to put six shots on goal in the second period, but made three of them count for goals -- one from
Tony Putt (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.), a power-play goal from
Mike Jackson (Jr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS) and a shorthanded tally from
Brad Schwartzbauer (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) that gave the Auggies their 3-2 lead at the 10:24 mark of the second frame.
Allen Hasbargen (Jr., Warroad, Minn.) and Eric Pitoscia (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) had the other Superior goals in the contest.
Superior plays at Bethel on Saturday (11/20) at 1 p.m. (Mariucci Arena), while Augsburg hosts St. Scholastica on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena.
