MENOMONIE, Wis. (11/20/99) -- Led by tournament most valuable player Jeremy Leibfried (Sr., Dickeyville, Wis.), the University of Wisconsin-Stout men's basketball team regained the title of its own Best Western Tip-Off Classic by downing Augsburg College, 83-70, Saturday, Nov. 20 at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Leibfried poured in 30 points -- 19 in the first half -- to lead all scorers. Leibfried was 7-for-13 from the floor, 2-for-7 from 3-point range, and hit 14-of-18 free throws.
Stout (2-0) held a 71-60 lead with three-minutes, 56-seconds remaining, but the Auggies (1-1) started to make a charge with back-to-back 3-pointers by
Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) and
John Anderson (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS). But down the stretch, Stout would convert 8-of-10 free throws to hold off the Auggies. Leibfried had six of those free throws.
The game was a constant parade to the foul line, with the Auggies making 19-of-35 attempts and Stout hitting 29-of-39.
Leibfried's career-high 30 points led all scorers. Stout's Pat Von Feldt (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) finished with 17 points, Dave Larson (So., La Crescent, Minn) added 11 points and Aaron Vachowiak (Jr., Wausau, Wis.) had 10. For the Auggies, Anderson led the way with 17 points. Reed finished with 16 and
Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) had 10.
In the consolation game, Cardinal Stritch (5-1), last years' Best Western Tip-Off champion, downed Suomi College, 104-69. Stritch's Jeff Kreiling matched a tournament record with 34 points. Cale Vogel finished with 15 points and Bill Neubauer had 14. Jon Paul Katona and Marcus Ylainen each had 10 points for Suomi (1-6).
