Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) recorded his fourth career shutout with a 32-save performance, leading his Augsburg College men's hockey team to a season-opening 3-0 win over Bethel College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game before 700 fans at Augsburg Ice Arena.
McIntosh, an ACHA second-team All-American in his freshman year and two-time All-MIAC selection, had two shutouts last season and one his freshman year. He scored the shutout despite facing five Bethel power plays in the contest.
Augsburg is now 1-0 both overall and in the MIAC with the win. Bethel drops to 0-1 overall and in the league. The two teams finish their series on Saturday night (11/6) at 7:05 p.m. at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.
Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 33-32 margin, though the Auggies held a 27-20 advantage at the end of two periods of play.
Roland Blumer (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS) opened the scoring by connecting on a feed from
Joe Johnson (So., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) past Bethel goalie Jeff Hall (So., Edina, Minn.) at the 42-second mark of the game.
The Auggies scored twice in the second period, both with assists going to newcomers
Brad Schwartzbauer (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Jaroslav Cesky (Fr., Praha, Czech Republic).
Steve LaMere (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) got the first goal, and
Chris McLeod (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope HS) had the other lamplighter on the power play at the 15:45 mark.
Hall made 30 saves, facing 33 Auggie shots in a losing effort.
