MINNEAPOLIS (11/6/99) --
Joe Johnson (So., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) scored the game-winning goal on a power-play blast with five minutes remaining on Saturday, giving Augsburg College a 4-3 win over host Bethel College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at Mariucci Arena.
Augsburg completed a series sweep of Bethel, in the opening series of MIAC play for both teams. Augsburg is 2-0 overall and in the MIAC, while Bethel is now 0-2 overall and in the MIAC. Augsburg has a two-game series against St. Thomas next weekend (Friday at St. Thomas, Saturday at Augsburg), while Bethel faces St. John's (Friday at home, Saturday at St. John's).
Johnson's power-play goal broke the momentum of Bethel, which had tied the game on consecutive goals in a two-minute span midway through the third period. Bethel's Kevin Adam (Sr., Caronport, Sask.) scored an unassisted power-play goal, followed by a second power-play goal from Chad Anderson (So., Bloomington, Minn.).
For the second night in a row, Augsburg scored in the opening minute of play, this night's effort coming from
Brad Schwartzbauer (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.).
Kris Arro (Sr., Etobicoke, Ont.) added a first-period power-play goal for the Auggies.
Other goals came from Bethel's Brian Cashman (So., Red Wing, Minn.) and Augsburg's
Andrew Shermoen (Jr., International Falls, Minn.).

Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) made 32 saves to pick up the victory, his second of the season. Jeff Hall (So., Edina, Minn.) made 25 saves in a losing effort.
