Game Summary:
STEVENS POINT, Wis. (12/10/99) --
Joe Marston (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) notched his first goal of the season at the 4:44 mark of the third period, and his Augsburg College teammates added an insurance tally and held on for a dramatic 6-4 win over host Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference men's hockey game at the K.B. Willett Arena on Friday night.
Augsburg improved to 3-5-1 with the win over the Pointers, who entered the weekend as the No. 2-rated team in the nation in the U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscollegehockey.com) Division III national rankings. Stevens Point drops to 9-3-0 on the season.
Marston's goal came just 18 seconds after Stevens Point's David Boehm (Jr., Eau Claire, Wis.) tied the game at 4-4 on a power-play goal.
Brad Holzinger (Fr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) added an insurance score for the Auggies at the 17-minute mark of the third period for the final margin of victory.
Augsburg, a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) school, rallied from a 3-1 first-period deficit to score the dramatic win over the Pointers, of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA).
Jaroslav Cesky (Fr., Praha, Czech Republic/New Prague, Minn., HS) scored the first two goals for the Auggies to improve his team-high total to six. He added an assist for a three-point night.
Steve LaMere (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) notched a shorthanded goal and
Joe Johnson (So., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) added another tally late in the second period to give the Auggies a 4-3 lead before Boehm tied the game for the Pointers at the 4:26 mark of the third frame.
Derek Toninato (Sr., Ashwaubenon, Wis.), Ryan Maxson (Jr., Hatley, Wis.) and Matt Interbartolo (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) had Stevens Point's three first-period goals.
Both teams made the most of their scoring opportunities, as Stevens Point had 30 shots to Augsburg's 23.
Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS) made 26 saves for Augsburg in goal; Stevens Point's Bob Gould (So., Eagle River, Wis.) stopped 17 Auggie shots.
Augsburg travels to Eau Claire, Wis., on Saturday (12/11) at 7:05 p.m. to take on another NCHA foe in Wisconsin-Eau Claire, while Stevens Point plays host to Bethel of the MIAC on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
