Men's Basketball --Augsburg 80, Bethel 77
MINNEAPOLIS (12/11/99) -- Justin Wismer (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn./Blake HS) scored a game-high 20 points as Augsburg College rallied from a 10-point first-half deficit to claim an 80-77 win over Bethel College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg remained unbeaten in MIAC play with the victory, improving to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the league. Bethel drops to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC.
Augsburg trailed 33-23 at the 7:02 mark of the first half, as the visiting Royals pulled away on a 9-1, three-minute run. Bethel led 42-37 at halftime. Marc Johnson (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) had 10 of his team-high 15 points in the first half for the Royals.
The Auggies slowly rallied in the second half to take their first lead of the game on a field goal from
Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) at the 16:50 mark of the second half. Neither team held more than a five-point lead the rest of the way. Wismer had seven of the Auggies' final 12 points in the game.
Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had 14 points, hitting three 3-pointers for the Auggies. Reed notched 13 points and
Chris York (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) had 10 points.
Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with two blocked shots.
Eric Johnson (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) and Marc Johnson each notched 15 points to lead the Royals, while Trevor Larson (So., Stillwater, Minn.) had 14 points. Jesse Peterson (Jr., Milaca, Minn.) and Matt Newman (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Ashwaubenon HS) each had six rebounds to lead the Royals.
Both teams are off for the holiday break until Monday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m., when Augsburg will play at St. Mary's and Bethel will travel to Carleton.
