Game Summary:
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (12/11/99) -- After falling behind 2-0, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team scored a power-play goal midway through the third period but could not complete the comeback in falling 2-1 Saturday to Augsburg College in an NCHA-MIAC challenge game at Hobbs Ice Center.
Neither team scored in the first period but
Andy Ness (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) gave Augsburg a 1-0 lead just under six minutes into the second period. The Auggies increased their lead to 2-0 on
Joe Johnson's (So., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) goal with 16 seconds remaining in the period.
Eau Claire cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the third period as senior Jake Mersberger scored a power-play goal on an assist from junior Adam Sklader. The goal was Mersberger's third this weekend and eighth of the season, tying him with Sklader for the team lead and gives him the team points lead with 17. The Blugolds could not complete the comeback however and are now 0-7 this season when trailing after two periods.
Senior Brandon Klement stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced but Augsburg goalie
Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS), who also assisted on their second goal, made 31 saves to notch the win. Both teams collected nine penalties with the Blugolds holding the Auggies scoreless on six power-play opportunities.
The Blugolds are now 4-8-1 on the season while Augsburg improves to 4-5-1. The two teams, who were facing each other for the first time since 1987, have now squared off 12 times with Augsburg having won 10 of those games.
The 'Golds will be back in action December 29 and 30 when they will participate in the St. Paul Minuteman Tournament. Augsburg returns home to face Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday night (12/17) at 7:05 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena.
