Women's Basketball --Gustavus Adolphus 66, Augsburg 55
MINNEAPOLIS (12/8/99) -- Katie Hanson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Gustavus Adolphus College women's basketball team to a 66-55 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Si Melby Hall.
Gustavus improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC, while Augsburg drops to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC.
Augsburg held an early lead and kept the game close in the first half, until a Gustavus 12-4 run to close the first half built a 32-24 Gustie halftime advantage.
The Gusties pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 21 points. Augsburg cut the lead again to 58-53 with 1:32 remaining with a 14-2 run of its own. But the Gusties controlled the game at the free-throw line, nailing 29 free throws in 43 attempts -- 21-of-28 in the second half.
Shelly Bishop (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) had 12 points for the Gusties, while Jessica Hogan (Jr., Fulda, Minn.) connected for nine points and three assists. Tricia Niebuhr (Jr., Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) had six points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. In all, the Gusties blocked nine Augsburg shots.
Augsburg was paced by
Jaime Kingsley (Jr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS), who nearly had a triple-double, with 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals.
Adrienne Tietz (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Monticello HS) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Betsy Gessell (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) and Michelle Anderson (Fr., Owatonna, Minn.) had eight points apiece, and
Erin Brockberg (Jr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS) had four points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Augsburg plays at Bethel on Saturday (12/11), while Gustavus hosts Hamline. Both games are at 3 p.m.
